FRO Throwdown: Gunhaver brought the 1977 and 1993 bottles. Damn cool, the 1977 became the oldest beer I’ve ever tasted, 32 years old! 1993: Deep sherry. Cardboard. Even with that, not overly oxidized. Some sourish funk. Wow. 1977: Similar but more funk and some weird bubblegum?

bottle 1977 & 1993 courtesy of gunhaver. Sample at O-town throwdown ’09 Pours pitch black, no head with oily golden lacing. Aroma was malty and definitely could tell this one had some age on it, thick chocolate nose with soy. Taste, malty, chocolate, thick palate, almost no carbonation and felt very boozy, got some kind of oxidized cork, leaving a faint salty mouthfeel. Not bad at all for its longevity.

bottle, 1983 vintage from the Kulminator. Pours pitch black with a thin dark tan head. Aroma is very fruity with cherry, plum and fig notes. This beer has aged unbelievably, and could very well rival current versions of this style. The body is moderate with light carbonation. Tons of really good dark malt flavor and a slight sour sherryness. Ends with a spice bitterness. What a treat to have a beer from the year I was born. Just excellent.

1983 bottle. A deep black stout with a thin moka head. A nice chocolate aroma with light soy sauce. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate, soy sauce, curious Brett, and lactic acid. A good interesting stout, which has resisted more than 20 years! Bottle at Kulminator, Nov. 2006.

Bottle courtesy of Greg Koch at our stop at the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens on 08/03/2008 on day three of RBSG. Vintage 1993. Clear caramel color with nearly no head. Big malty aroma with caramel and honey. Caramel and molassas flavor with a smooth finish. Medium full body with no carbonation.

33 cL bottle, 1983 vintage, thanks to faeroeviking for bringing this - nice surprise! Pours dark brown to black with a fully diminished. Dense roasted malty and dark fruity. Very dense. Flavour and mouthfeel is oily. Dark hardroasted malty with a mild chalky note. Smooth and slight tarish. Dark roasted and tarish finish with a smooth alcohol presence.

1993 bottle traded from Goldtwins a few years back. Absolutely flat, black syrupy pour. Complex aroma alcohol, soy sauce, and chocolate. Lots of soy, too much for me. Sour finish.

Re-rate 9/5/09: Bottle sample at Kulminator in Antwerp after LCRBM. 1983 bottle. black-colored. Aroma of chocolate, sherry, coffee and dark fruits. Sweet chocolate flavor with some nice bitterness - licorice, alcohol, plums, raisins and some oxidation. Full-bodied. 8/4/7/4/15=3.8
1973 bottle from eBay. Dark brown to black color - not totally opaque. No real head but a bit of light-brown bubbles. Great aroma of dark chocolate, some milk chocolate, a bit of coffee, some licorice, light fruitiness and notes of alcohol. Wonderful sweet flavor with malt, roastiness, bitter chocolate, caramel, some saltiness, dried fruits notes and some roasty bitterness that’s getting stronger by the almost completely dry finish. Medium to full body, a bit syrupy. Really great at this age of 35 (!) years.

I just poured the end of the bottle to the snifter and now it’s a bit sour and astringent. 8/4/9/4/17=4.2

Rating # 900. This was a gift from the generous goldtwins, thanks Larry. 1993 bottle. The cap pops off with a slight hiss but no visiible carbonation smoke in the neck. It pours completely dead, no head, no lacing, no bubbles, and no life. Swirling the glass does nothing. The color is black with blood red edges. Aroma at first is really cool with molasses, tobacco, sweet burnt sugar, and a bit of rubbing alcohol. But this soon passes and the age starts to show. There is a lot of age, cardboard, and sour oxidation. Taste never seems all that good, lots of oxidation and hints of what this beer was in the aftertaste with bitter chocolate and some roast. No carbonation and a lightly slick mouthfeel. I have been told this is the off year and I would love to try it again (a better bottle).

Bottle. [Vintage 1983] Dark black color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, beige head. Aroma is vintage, licorice, soy sause, coffee / chocolate, quit fruity. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a long duration. Very powerful and stille moderate. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is flat.
