Description
The brewing tradition in Helsinki is hundreds of years old. The latest chapter of this story began in 1995 on the island of Suomenlinna right outside of the city. It is here that a one man brewery was founded in the former jetty barracks. The brewery has grown to be home for a small group of dedicated professionals, all passionate about beer culture in Finland. Now Suomenlinna Brewery is one of the largest local breweries in town.

The rich history at this UNESCO world heritage site has been the inspiration for many new beers at Suomenlinna Brewery. Each beer and cider we brew has its own story to tell. When professional attitude and modern technology are combined, the end results are bold, honest, high quality drinks. Our special releases are a sign of our inspiration to create and to try new things.

When you drink a Suomenlinna beer or cider we hope you taste our commitment to quality and creativity. Come visit our brewery on the island of Suomenlinna, the pearl of the Helsinki archipelago. We hope you enjoy every sip. Kippis!

(On tap 25 cl) Comes as "Suomenlinnan Viaporin Talviolut" at 5% ABV. A winter-beer the friendly guy in the bar told me about this one. Pretty dark - almost chestnut - lager, small, tight head. Fresh, a bit of caramel and a lot of hops - an apparent house character of the brewery. 170405

(On tap 25 cl) A tiny, little microbrewery on an island 15 minutes by ferry from Helsinki - go there if you get the chance. Cute. Straw golden, not much head. But then it seems as if they saved everything for the hops. this sure is one hoppy Pils. Sharp but fresh. A bit like a North-German Pilsener. 170405

Draught at brewpub
Dark ruby, almost opaque. Not much head. Nose has some toffee and fruit candy, maybe some hops. Light to medium bodied, slightly roasted. Some chocolate in the aftertaste. Quite lame.

Draught at brewpub
Dark ruby color, mostly vanishing head. Aroma has mild hops and soy sauce. Soy sauce also in flavor. Light to medium bodied, slightly sweet, low carbonated. Mild roasted and bitterish aftertaste. This patch was not ready, I think.

On tap at the Suomenlinnan Panimo brewpub on the island of Sveaborg/Suomenlinna at the seaward approach to Helsinki (a UNESCO World Heritage site). This is an English style ale, golden to amber colour, slightly cloudy, moderate to low head. Moderate yeasty and hoppy aroma, some yeastiness and cloves in the well rounded flavour. Sufficient body to be a treat, light enough to be refreshing. Pleasant bitterness in the aftertaste. I’d say the brewer has done a good job with this one.

On tap at the brewpub, which is situated in a listed building at the former Swedish (later Russian and Finnish) military island stronghold Sveaborg (since 1918 Suomenlinna) near Helsinki - now a UNESCO world heritage site. As I had this porter after the good Coyet Ale, my expectations were high (which normally, as in this case, leads to disappointment). Good to moderate head, pitch black. Coffee aroma with hints of fruit. Strangely sweet and fruity flavour. Some roast bitterness in the aftertaste.

Similar to many American brewpub ambers IMO, lightly earthy English hop character, but quite mild. Yes, the island is nice but the pub doesn't open til 3pm (a common problem in Helsinki).

A pale reddish brown, softly malty and creamy ale, similar to the Irish ales. Medium bodied, some rostiness, rather low bitterness.

Brown-black coloured. Light bodied for a porter. Slightly roasty with medium bitterness. This porter is not as exceptional as the location of the brewpub, which is situated on a beatiful island in the inlet to Helsinki.
