The brewery was founded in 1864 by Jean-Baptiste Biernaux and Leopold Deponson in the midst of the industrial revolution. It took the name OF SA Brasserie de Jumet when it came under the ownership of the Biernaux family in 1891. After the First World War, in 1927, it became known as the Union Brewery.

In 1935, in London, she received the gold medals at the International Exhibition in London. With the purchase by the Alken-Maes Group in 1978, the production facilities were modernized with a production of 350,000 hl.

In 2004, production was reduced to 280,000 hl with a staff of 20 people.

10/IX/16 - 25cl bottle @ De Heeren van Liedekercke - BB: 24/II/03 (2016-1007)

Clear dark brown beer, creamy irregular beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: pretty sweet, caramel, pretty oxidized (obviously), some hint of chocolate, orange peel. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, caramel, very oxidized, spicy touch, some orange peel. Aftertaste: sweet, oxidized, caramel, some cardboard, chocolate notes. Has aged very well. Still very decent after +15 years!

Vintage bottle, best before 2003. Whales ! Pours unclear amber, not much head. Smell is Dusty and oxidized. Taste is mildly sweet , Sharp oxidation. Some maderization. Not too bad to be honest. Bit thin , Woody aftertaste due to the age

Old rating (and I won’t get a chance to re-rate as apparently it has been discontinued now). Heaviest and ’rarest’ of the three Ciney beers, with a deep burgundy colour and thick pale beige head; biscuit, caramelly malts, sweet with spices (liquorice), bit metallic, alcohol warmth in the finish. Not horrible, but not good either. I for one will not miss this.

Classic oud bruin invented by the Zulte brewery decades ago, taken over by Alken-Maes in 1988 when that brewery ceased activities and in 2007 discontinued altogether. The Alken-Maes version was made with the artificial addition of lactic acid but still remained something of a classic in the style, a dark chestnut coloured beer with thinnish off-white head and malty profile with dry fruitiness and clear but superficial and artificial lactic acidity, dryish chocolatey malty finish, thinnish body. Was a simple, artificial, almost ’industrial’ example of an otherwise very artisanal style. I for one don’t miss it, but given its local popularity, some others do.

Tasted about twelve years ago when this was quite popular for a while. An amber coloured rendition of the Grimbergen brand, with loose, off-white head and sweetish character of caramelly and slightly nutty malts, apple and some spiciness, mild bitterish finish, but artificial and a bit bland like the other Grimbergen beers.

1988 bottle from DHVL. It pours clear deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is earth, wood, toast, cocoa, raisin and light spice. The taste is smooth, lightly tart, dark fruits, berry, light caramel, raisin, apple and sherbet notes. Light-medium body and soft carbonation. Pretty well rounded and rather drinkable stuff. Not bad for a 25 yr old!
