Description
Starting way back in the 1930's, Rochdale, New Zealand's oldest cidery embarked on a journey to produce the world's best cider combining pure glacial water with the finest New Zealand crushed apples.

At the top of New Zealand’s South Island during the 1930s, amidst the spectacular scenery and the sun-drenched beaches of the Nelson region, the Rochdale Cidery began to take shape on a site framed by thriving apple orchards, and on top of a glacial aquifer.

Our glacial water is sourced deep below our brewery from an ice age reservoir, traced to the Palaeolithic period some 14,000 years ago.

Bottles of crisp golden goodness started rolling out in the 40s, helping to raise the spirits of a nation dealing with the challenges and tragedies of WWII. Ever the trail-blazer, Rochdale remained the sole manufacturer of cider well into the 70s, when the McCashin family first set eyes on this local institution.

Before long they’d bought the place, taking possession in 1980 but continuing the traditions of excellence and innovation that are entrenched in the brand.

Pours sugary pink soda, heavy carbonation, bright pink foam. Good soft fruit funk on the nose. Flavour is cloying sugar and berry concentrate. Lingering sugar on the palate. There's just so much missing here.

330ml bottle from Dan Murphys, Hurstville. Golden colour, white foam head that dissipates away and aroma of fruity apple. Taste is sweet, juicy apple, green apple, vanilla hint, with some acidity. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel, light to medium bodied, spritzy carbonation, dry acidic finish with some residual sweetness. OK

330ml bottle into schooner glass. Slight aroma of tart apple, some bread. Pale yellow cider, no head. Bubbles are small and steady. Flat mouthfeel, ’Granny Smith’ flavour. Finish is tart early then a bit of sherbet sweetness. Not bad, easy drinking.

Light tart apple overpowered by a decent amount of sugary sweet apple. A solid apple juice flavor overall that is aided by the sweetness. Light booze heat in the finish. Crispy, tangy finish that I wasn’t expecting with all the sweetness. Good but a tad sweet for me.

Bottle. Gold, vanishing white mousse. Aroma of sweet apples, vanilla, some wood. Medium carbonation. Sweet with some tarter apples, no cooked apples. Dries out with some skin and astringency. Straightforward but a decent drink I’d have again.

Bottled. A golden cider with a thin white head. The aroma has notes of sweet apples. The flavor is sweet with notes of apples, but still with a slight mouthpuckering acidity, leading to a tart finish.
