Great deep brown coloured body, sort of like cola, with a ruby and copper glow all topped by a nice and well-served tan head. Aroma of good toasted malt, a bit of light pumpkin pie spice, allspice, cereal and a ton of nice caramel and toffee. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour at first then shows a softer, nuttier taste with a mild amount of light spices and a good finish of subdued caramel sweetness. Aftertaste is fairly minimal with only the sweetness and toasted malt really coming out at all. Overall, a good beer - definitely not a porter in my mind, but then again, it’s from Northern Ireland, so the styles don’t really mesh well. Definitely nice to sample this beer - purchased at McHughes Off-License in Killbarack, Dublin, Republic of Ireland on 20-February-2009, sampled back on the other side of the pond at home in Washington on 26-October-2010.

Bottled, from Bull and Castle, Dublin, Ireland. Hazy pale golden, creamy head. Citric nose. Sweet and creamy, medium bodied with rounded mouthfeel. Hop aromatic with some tropical fruits. Medium bitterness. Pleasant, if sweet.

Bottled, from Bull and Castle, Dublin, Ireland. Near black, rich creamy head. Roasty coffee aroma. Bone dry with light body and well rounded mouthfeel. Salty licorice and aniseeed before a short bitter finish.

Cask@GBBF2010. Pale golden colour, small bubbly head. Aroma is fruits, nectar, some mild earthy notes as well as some mild honey. Flavour is being quite much the same along with some slight nuttyness and the honey being more evident.

From cask. Pours clear and golden orange with a small to fully gone head. Aroma is mild fruity and slight orange. Citric and bitter flavoured. Mild fruity and dry. Ends bitter and dry.

From cask. Pours clear and golden yellow with a fully gone head. Aroma is grassy and slight herbal hoppy. Bitter and mild citrusy hops flavoured. Dry and bitter into the far finish.

Golden coloured body with a light creamy glow and a very nice thick (two centimetre tall) off-white head. Aroma of corn, lemons, oranges, light hops and a touch of metal. Light-bodied; Sharp malty flavour with lemons, metal and some cardboard comes through. Aftertaste shows a light fruity flavour with a subtle hoppiness too. Overall, not such a great beer - fairly mild in flavours, but not horrible tasting at all. Worth a try if you can find this - I thought this was a common find, but it doesn’t look like it is - nice! I sampled this 500 mL bottle purchased from McHughes Off-License in Dublin, Ireland (Republic) on 20-February-2009, sampled at home on this side of the pond in Washington on 08-February-2010.

Medium light brown body. Dark red body. Papery earthy sugary aroma with chocolatey notes. Dry earthy caramel and apepr taste with roasty chocolate and wood notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dry-bitter floral earthy old books aftertaste. Oxidized and too old. Must rerate. (0.5l bottle, BBF 2008-12.)
