2006 250mL bottle (fresh on the shelf, so I am assuming so, anyways) consumed on 9/30/06.
This guy dosent mess around with the sediment. Easily the most I have yet seen in a nigori, creating an intensely milky body, with some rough rice hull pieces quite notable. Dosent leave legs on the glass, so much as it leaves a film of sticky rice particles and clear liquid.
Coconut, of course, in the nose, but here it’s not quite as assertive and fruity, being more rounded and, most likely, dulled by the extreme amount of sediment. Very nutty, much like almond paste, with hints of vanilla and bean curds. Alcohol is well-concealed, and there is only a slight amount of rice sharpness. Medium strength of aroma.
As much as I appreciate unfiltered beverages, this one might take just a bit too far. The rice hulls are very coarse and provide a very gritty texture, which I must admit is quite disconcerting. Still, there is some creamy vanilla-coconut flavor, with light melon and almond mixing toghether. Very dry on the end, and somewhat astringent, or probably more accurately, bland from the sediment. Alcohol is again, well-concealed in flavor. Tapioca-like flavors emerge as it warms, yielding more flavor and the finish is still highly coconutty. Still don’t feel like I have much concept of nigori, let alone any sake.

2004 or 2005 bottle from the Organic Co-op in Belfast, ME. Consumed 7/1/2005. Huge legs on the glass, very three dimensional and lasting. Clearer than water!! Talking with Buch_Dich about these Junmai Ginjos, he did seem to agree with me that these can start to run together and get difficult to differentiate from one another (myself being no expert on the subtleties of sake). So I seem to get the usual coconut milk and mashed, boiled rice in the nose and flavor. Light springwater and vanilla in both the nose and flavor. This one had something spicy on the finish, I have no idea what. Hard to describe, maybe something lightly herbal. Extremely clean and with an exceptionally low amount of alcohol apparency, it’s clearly quite high quality. This one did seem to have a meatier texture than most, with lots of body and light sweetness. Quite drinkable, and deceivably strong at 14%. Quite enjoyable. Dry on the end, as I have found this style to be.
