Description
Set up in 1981 as Pitfield Brewery operating from 8 Pitfield Street, N1 before moving to 4 Hoxton Square, N1 in 1986. Briefly relocated to Stourbridge following a merger with Premier Midland Ales, becoming Pitfield's Premier Brewing Co in 1990 but in 1991 the company went into liquidation.

Revived in 1996 as Pitfield's Brewery at 14 Pitfield Street, N1 before relocating outside of London to Great Horkesley, Essex in 2006 and then to Moreton, Ongar in 2007.

Martin, Pitfield's brewer/owner retired in 2012 to run a pub in Newmarket. Andy Skene bought the business and continued to brew Pitfield's beers alongside his own Dominion beers. This ceased in 2018.

Cloudy brown beer, good off white head. Light airy semi dry palate. Sourish with an alarming trace of soap. Maybe a little honey. Dry minerally finish. Oh dear! Infected surely? Another poor beer from this once great brewer - really hope they can get it together again.

Bottle from Pig’s Ear 2008, bottled November 2006, 4 years old
Hazy amber color; almost flat. The malt and caramel aroma is quite nice; there is also some alcohol; a bit nutty. Very sweet, caramel and malt flavor, mellow, with a nutty touch. Considering the 14%, the alcohol is quite hidden. It doesn’t show signs of age or oxidisation. As I love Barley Wines, this is a good sweet juice, even if without big complexity; the version of the following year is more complex; this one goes well if you look for sugars.

2010-08-21, bottle from Pig’s Ear 2008, brewed in 2007, 3 years old, 6-4-7-3-15=35
Dark amber color; very small head. Light malt aroma. Good caramel flavor, well balanced, with a little alcohol but overall hiding well the ABV. Tasted side to side with the original version, it has more complexity, in the flavor, but it loses something with the aroma.

Hazy dark amber color with red shades. The aroma is strongly vegetables. It has a quite good malt and caramel flavor, sweet, solid, with a good bitterness. Warming alcohol. Pleasant, and not showing signs of age.

Chelmsford Beer Festival. Bright clear gold beer. Suddy white head. Light dry palate. Trace of sulphur but nothing too bad. Mildly bitter orange and grapefruit hops. Just poky enough to be interesting. Dry finish. Ok.

Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchants, Brockley. Copied from barely eligible scrawl possibly written whilst inebriated Amber pour with a white head. Caramel and citrus nose, almost chemical (i’d actually written ’comical’ in my note book!). Citrus, peach and herb flavours. Bitter finish.

Bottle shared with Nick at the Euston Tap. Pours dark brown with a big, light tan, foam head. The aroma quickly gave away this beer’s poor condition. Though not an old bottle by any means, there is an obvious sourness to the malts. Also detectable are some mild roast notes. Flavor too has sourness and you can just pick out the roast notes. Not very sweet. Medium in body with average carbonation. Some roasty malts to finish but overshadowed by the sourness. Too bad.

Cask condition at Pigs Ear BF 2010. Hazy amber colour with thin beige head. Some rose petal fruit. Bit bland for such a strong beer.
