Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.
Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

Draft at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook. This one poured a dark, nearly black color without much of a head. Aroma was pretty much like puréed raspberries, with a touch of roasted and chocolate notes. Flavor was roasted malts, with plenty of sweet raspberries. Slightly tart notes in the finish. At 9.3% this one is a bit higher than this beer probably deserved. A nice lighter stout would probably have worked with this beer about perfect with the fruits. Otherwise this beer was pretty enjoyable.

Draft at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook. Poured an extremely hazy reddish orange color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was earthy notes, dried fruits, yeast character. Flavor was dried fruits, sweet notes. Touch boozy but surprisingly drinkable.

Weak coffee nose. Mahogany, medium tan head, nice lacing. Distinct flavor of tootsie rolls, coffee overtones. Prunes at midpalate. Medium body. Nice balance, with an interplay between sweet and bitter.

Charred beef and coffee aroma. Black, medium creamy tan head, nice lacing. Milk chocolate, pepper, plum, and vanila flavor. Creamy mouthfeel, peppery bite on the back of the palate. Delicious, but the heat can be a little disracting.

Burnt amber. Nose is very yeasty and bready with some figs and residual sugars. Taste is uber sweet with some oaky vanilla notes but is overall just too sweet. Tastes more like an old ale than a quad. It’s good but very forgettable.

slightly hazy burnt orange and no head. smells like cherries and raspberries. no hop presence at all. Taste is orange, some muted old hops and some oaky bourbon booziness but it’s very weird. As for an IPA, it’s sort of a shell of an iPA and very boozy and weak on the bitterness.
