Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.
Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

16oz can. Very much like the base beer, this one poured a near pitch black color with little more than a wispy, small tan head to it. Aroma was some light spices, roasted and sweet malt characters, and what appears to be gingerbread. Thinner than the regular GBS. Flavor is cocoa, roasted malts, and gingerbread. This is highly drinkable, but I think some might find it a bit thin, though I really appreciated being able to drink this and not feel like I needed to close my eyes on the couch for a bit.

It's relatively smooth, but there's definitely an intense bourbon character to this that really masks the underlying beer.

Pretty much like the standard gingerbread Stout but a little thinner and a lot more crushable.

Draft pour at Hardywood West Creek. Poured a very slight hazy yellow color, no head to speak of at all. Aroma was pleasant apple cider - apple, with some very light tartness. Flavor was green apples. Not overly sweet. Lemony.

Draft pour at Hardywood West Creek. Poured a light, clear copper color with a very small, wispy off-white head. Aroma was big meaty notes, pleasant smoked meat, light humidor. Flavor was pleasant smoked meat. The aroma I get is something that brings me back to smelling an old smokehouse at a one of the historic houses in my area - centuries of smoke. Flavor also contained a pleasant sweet malts.

Draft pour at Hardywood West Creek. Poured a nearly pitch black color with little more than a wispy, small tan head to it. Aroma was some light spices, roasted and sweet malts, ginger and some charred marshmallow. Flavor was like the base beer, ginger, cocoa and roasted malts. Some marshmallow, light extra sweetness.

Surprised I hadn't rated this. 16oz can pours a thick black with very little beige head. Nose has malt and lots of cinnamon and brown sugar, big nutmeg too. Flavor has actually of brown sugar and malt and cinnamon and nutmeg. Full, sweet finish.
