Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.

Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

12oz bottle. Poured a dark cola color, light brown hue to it. Almost no head to speak of, with nice light alcohol legs on the side of the glass. Aroma was really nice bourbon notes, not hot at all - big bourbon, woody notes, vanilla. Gingerbread, ginger and cookie really held up well, considering the alcohol content and the barrel notes. This was so incredibly smooth. Caramel finish. Delicious.

12oz stubby bottle. Poured a nearly pitch black color with little more than a wispy, small tan head to it. I hate to say this, but I'm not much of a Rum guy. So maybe I approached this beer differently than most people who are drinking it. Don't really like the flavor, too rum spice, rum cake, spices. This masks the base beer a bit too much here. There's not enough chocolate or ginger.

Bottle - 13%, so I'm going to rate the Mega version over the other entry which is listed at 10.4%. Aroma was amazing apple brandy, light gingerbread spices, pleasant roasted malts. Super smooth, with some moderate, but pleasant heat. Green apple (but not the off-flavor). Smooth. Base is well masked here in this one.

I was really worried this was going to be trash, but this is so smooth and so delicious. Really good bourbon notes, nice woody barrel. Light Ginger and cookie. Absolutely, positively, smooth as silk.

Stubby from Tavour. Pours very dark brown with a small creamy tan head which persisted. Aroma of ginger and graham flour. Full bodied. Flavor of ginger, bourbon, graham flour and perhaps clove/cinnamon. Not sticky, but not wholly dry. Dark roasty but not toasty malt. Ginger subs for bitter. Nicely done.

12 ounce stubby bottle. 2021 vintage is 11.6% ABV. Opaque brown color. Foamy tan head dissipates quickly to a small creamy cap. Earthy, sweet, roasted malt aroma. Notes of vanilla, coconut and mild coffee. Flavor upfront is sweet molasses, oak, vanilla and coffee. Notes of cocoa and bourbon in middle. Sticky, slick mouthfeel. Warming alcohol on backend.
