Description
In 1886 the Valkenburg branch named "De Valkenburgsche Leeuwenbrouwerij'' of the German ''Dittmann & Sauerländer Actiën Brauerei'' was founded. After WW I the Valkenburg brewery became independant as Bierbrouwerij de Leeuw. In 2000 the brewey was acquired by the Belgian brewer Haacht and in 2005 all brewing activites in Valkenburg came to an end. The Leeuw Pilsner and Oud Bruin were from now on brewed at the Belgian parent company. The beer is still available in bars and restaurants in South Limburg.

(Bottle 30 cl) Usually you associate Witbiers with spring or summer - a light quencher. But this is one of few winter wits. Orangey, honey coloured with a very limited head and a rather low carbonation. Quite refined and spicy with some of the usual notes of orange peel and coriander. But this is more potent and full-bodied. Dry and very fruity with a slight bitterness. Nice indeed. 140401

(Bottle 30 cl) Deep, dark mahogany brown with a small head. Malty and extremely sweet (artificial sweeteners) with a thin, thin body. Reminds me of Danish "Hvidtøl" - just worse. Disappointing. 120101

Pale copper-tinted gold; creamy off-white head. Vanilla, grain, wet cardboard nose. Fine initial bitterness, seamlessly going over in a sweet maltiness, crisp, cornflakes-like, without completely disappearing. Light MF, some filling which again reminds me of maize. Bitterness gives some refreshing quality. Not bad as pilseners go. But still very much a Dutch pilsener.

Bottled (BB 05/2004)
Hazy pale yellow. Lively carbonation. Medium foamy white head, mostly vanishing. Aroma has citrus, yeast and strawberries. Medium-bodied, smooth palate. Fruity with banana flavor. Excellent refreshing summer beer.

Clear dark red color. Good balance between malts, hops, bitterness and sweetness. Decent bock.
