Description
In 1886 the Valkenburg branch named "De Valkenburgsche Leeuwenbrouwerij'' of the German ''Dittmann & Sauerländer Actiën Brauerei'' was founded. After WW I the Valkenburg brewery became independant as Bierbrouwerij de Leeuw. In 2000 the brewey was acquired by the Belgian brewer Haacht and in 2005 all brewing activites in Valkenburg came to an end. The Leeuw Pilsner and Oud Bruin were from now on brewed at the Belgian parent company. The beer is still available in bars and restaurants in South Limburg.

(Draught at De Spuyt, Amsterdam, 1 March 2014) Yellow colour with frothy, white head. Malty nose with bread, grainy malt and hints of boiled vegetables. Malty taste with notes of bread, grainy malt, a touch of tropical fruit and hints of vegetables. A slight bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Drinkable, but hardly necessary.

Standard pilsner. Not bad, just very plain and boring. Drink it with food. Made for the masses.

Nice hoppy nose. Clear golden colour, frothy white head stays awhile. Aroma bread, grass, leaves. Taste light sweet and bitter, light to medium body, average carbonation, smooth light bitter finish. Not bad at all but it used to be better; I think I miss the special marly (mergel) quality of the water when this beer was brewed in Valkenburg, those were the days... --- Beer merged from original tick of Pilsener on 31 Dec 2000 at 11:00 - Score: 7. Original review text: I drank this a lot in my youth, a nice decent pilsner.

Clear deep brown colour, good frothy brownish head. Aroma caramel, coffee, roasty, brown sugar, liquorice. Taste heavy sweet, sugary. Light body, thick feel, sweet malty finish. In the Dutch province of Limburg an old ladies drink this or mix it 50/50 with pilsener in order to slow down in alcohol without losing the drinking flow...

@Backlog Donker bruin bier, beige kraag, enorm moutig in aroma als in de smaak, bruine suiker en karamel, je moet er maar van houden, niet mijn ding, veel te zoet. --- Beer merged from original tick of Oud Bruin on 18 May 2018 at 15:40 - Score: 3

Poured from a large screw top bottle, into a 0.2 litre, tall, thin tumbler behind the bar at t’ Pumpke, Valkenburg on 21st Oct 2012. Dark and extremely malty sweet: It was a dark brown almost black colour (but the bar is very dark, so I could be out a few shades in my eyes): on top a full, deep tan covering that hung around for the whole glass and produced some heavy lacing. The nose and taste were just too malty sweet for me really: the molasses just made this a malt drink, not a beer.
