750 ml bottle from Trader Joe’s Bakersfield. Nose is clove, candi sugar, nutmeg, and allspice. Hazy, very dark brown with a big, heavy lacing, tan head. Flavor is lightly sweet and caramelly with background bitterness.

DEFINITE ginger and molasses smell right under the cap! Pours a sort of Belgian spiced ale brown with some carbonation, but that dwindles away. But I had to notch back the Aroma for some kind of solventy nose, and more cookie spice than apple. Then I realized the solvent was just WAY too much nutmeg. Taste gets the apple okay, but then there's WAY too much nutmeg again. Some cider around the edges, and yes, some molasses. But just not enough to make me feel like I haven't dumped too much nutmeg into something and eaten it.

Bottle from Trader Joe's. Lacks the depth of a stout. More like a spiced ale or a thin winter warmer. I do like the spice mix, but it's totally missing that stout character. Cinnamon, ginger, cookie. Very thin caramel. Update: nearly undrinkable the second time I had this. I don't know what went wrong with this particular beer.

12oz bottle. Bought a six pack, d'oh. Just a touch too thin. Spices are actually pleasant for the most part, but it's missing a thicker body that could help pull this pumpkin beer off. Clove, cinnamon.

$1.34 bottle from TJ-CHO. Extremely clear medium brown with a small beige head. Ginger, caramel, brown leaf, cinnamon, cookie nose. Black tea, ginger, sugar cookie, caramel. Quite sugary sweet, not stout-like at all... this should be called a brown ale.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with excellent retention tophats before slightly receding. Nutmeg and cinnamon aromas. Sharp with sweet licorice, chocolate, nutmeg and cinnamon front to back. Lasting earthy anise finish.
