Bottle, at Patrick's. A black one, with a small light tan head. Lightly boozy aroma, citrusy, with roasted malts, hints of dark chocolate and coffee grit, and some herbal hints. It's full bodied and lightly warming, sweet, with a herbal bitterness. Roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and a herbal note in the flavor. Citrusy flavor and bitterness. Lasting finish. Interesting and tasteful, unusual barrel but it works. 230421

Bottle. Dark brown, almost black body under a finger sized, dense, deep brown head. Strong aroma of dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, dry fruit, anis and warming alcohol. Taste is sweet, dark roasted malt, dark, bitter chocolate, dry fruit, anis, licorice, some wood and smooth but distinct alcohol. Balanced bitterness. Fine body with long lasting aftertaste. Very nice, complex and tasty.

(Bottle) Dark brown colour with brief, foamy, beige head. Malty, vinous nose with dried apricots, raisins, oak wood, cognac, chocolate, coffee, toasted coconut, vanilla and a touch of cardamom. Malty, vinous, sweet taste with notes of oak wood, cognac, chocolate, dried apricots, coffee, coconut, hazelnuts, vanilla, brown sugar and a mild roasty/spicy bitterness in the finish. Fairly, clean, tasry and well rounded. Nice one.

Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head but it doesn't last. Smooth palate, mildly dry and fairly light for the style, good fine carbonation. Smooth malts, a nice light creamy milk chocolate vibe. The highly unusual barrelling provides spice and nice fruity herbal vibe that goes well with the spicy alcohol. Nice job, unusual but tasty and coherent, another inventive Impy from this Icelandic brewery.

Opaque black brown beer with a big tan head. The blackberry brandy punches through the dark malt nose. Airy palate, soft and with reasonable fine carbonation. Airy dark malts, a soft creamy sweetness and mellow chocolate, more milk than dark chocolate. A little Malteasers buried underneath. The blackberry brandy carries on from the nose, obvious and fruity and a little spicy. Finishes light and spicy. Delicious. I wish Surtur beers were more readily available over here. They have an inventive streak with Impies and the end results are rather spiffing!
