Description
Thurstons Brewery was formed at the Crown in Horsell in October 2012 with a 3/4 barrel plant in the kitchen. The original plan was to produce an occasional brew for the Crown, but we were asked if we would supply Woking Beer Festival with our first beer, Stedmans Ale, a request that we gladly agreed to. The result of the Festival was our first award - third overall. Now we had the bug. More beers followed starting with Maltway, then Festival, Milk Stout, Horsell Gold and Horsell Best!!!!

The VanHorsell Gold and Horsell Best soon become our mainstay beers, and along with Milk Stout and Festival Ale, keeping up with demand soon became a problem. In November 2013 we returned to Woking Beer Festival with two beers this time - Horsell Gold and Milk Stout, and were delighted when both beers won their class, Gold took first overall and Milk Stout took second. Milk Stout also went on to win the Gosport Winterfest. Subsequently, plans were hatched to install a 4.5 barrel plant next door to the pub at 102c High Street.

Work started in January 2014 and on the 7th February we removed part of the roof and lowered the copper and mash tun into the building. The fermentation vessels didn’t arrive until 31st March, but as we had had these made for us, they were oval in shape and so were able to fit through the window with the help of a few of the regulars from the Crown. After much wiring, plumbing and swearing and a few dry runs, the first brew was completed on the 9th May 2014.

Bottle at home. Bought at Bourne Valley Farm Shop. Malty nuts and chocolate aroma, with something yeasty in the shadows. Tempted to describe it as treacle brown. Creamy, if thin, off-white head. Quite bitter. Also develops sourness. Light bodied with soft carbonation. OK but the taste is not quite right, as if it was left too long in the oven or such like.

Bottle at home. Bought from Bourne Valley Farm Shop. Chocolate and nuts aroma. Black, with a red hue. Beige head, soon settles down to a few mm. Laidback at first, creamy coffee, lactose, chocolate. The bitterness builds in strength through to the long coffee finish. Light but creamy body.

Bottle at home. Bought at Inn At Home, Guildford. We have a gusher! Had been sat on a shelf for a while but lost about a third of the beer when it went ape on being openned. Roast coffee aroma, but stale. Sweet caramel in the mix as well. Black, to dark brown when held in light. Initial massive beige head soon thins down. Real bitter impact. Coffee, sour berries. This carries through to the finish and aftertaste. Although more creamy around the tongue. Light but pleasantly carbonated. But the sour taste just detracts from the overall enjoyment for me.

Bottle at home. Bought from Inn At Home, Guildford. Hay aroma, with a sharp citrus kick. A hazy golden. Initially extremely foamy head, still settles down in to a good 5mm. Initial bitter hit, going in to medium bitteness and a hard to pin down underlying sweetness. Citrus, pepper, champagne. Light bodied, and dry, with prominent (possibly, too much so) carbonation. Good stuff.

Gravity cask at the Yateley Cask & Cork Festival. My 100th Surrey rate. An opaque, glossy, near-black, pour with a ring of cream head; rich chocoalte malt aroma; lactic body, with a milky chocoalte taste, that’s pleasantly not sweet; then a milky finish with some lingering lightly done toast. A pleasantly satisfying milk stout.

Gravity cask at the Yateley Cask & Cork Festival. Pale amber with a ring of white head; floral aroma; sweet tasting with biscuity malts; and alight peppery hop finish. Pleasant, but nothing more.

Bottle at the Crown, Horsell. 22/07/16. Light and floral aroma. Dark amber. This ber went off like a fountain when I went to pour it - foam everywhere. However then settled down in to a fluffy white head. A sour kick. Medium bitter and hoppy, with a malt and caramel aftertaste. Not unexpectedly the carbonation comes through. A good effort.

Cask at the Crown, Horsell. 22/07/16. Slight hay aroma. Deep gold. Frothy frogspawn head. Medium bitter, hoppy. Very light bodied. Another one of those golds that is just not very interesting.

Cask at the Crown, Horsell. Pale amber with a thin white head; light malty aroma; light orangey citrus taste; then a dry biscuity finish. A pleasant summer ale - perfect for a Saturday afternoon in the garden.

Cask at the Crown, Horsell. Pale chestnut with a tight beige head that laces the glass nicely; biscuity malt aroma; biscuity malt taste with some caramel; then a dry finish with a light woody bitterness. An old fashioned bitter, very drinkable.
