Description
Established as the Matthews Brewing Co in 2005 by Stuart Matthews and Sue Appleby in a farm workshop estate in the village of Timsbury, a few miles outside Bath. Using the best ingredients such as Maris Otter malt , this small 5 barrel brewery soon became known for its distinctive, uncompromising ales.
Taken over by Dawkins Taverns and name changed in January 2010. The Brewery moved from Timsbury near Bath to Bristol in 2016.
Closed May 1st 2023 due to cost of living crisis.

Cask-conditioned at the Green Man, Bristol 28/3/2013. Clear gold with a slight white head. Light aroma of hay, apricot and grassy hops. Flavour was sweet, with stewed fruits, weetabix style grains and a moderately bitter finish. Ok.

Cask-conditioned at the Green Man, Bristol 28/3/2013. Almost black in colour with a slight, off-white head. Aroma of plain chocolate, black coffee and a whiff of smoke. Flavour had more chocolate, roasted malts and liquorice, before a dryish finish. Very good.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 16/2/2013. Deep gold with a slight white head. Tropical fruit aroma with a touch of pine. Flavour had crisp malts, mango and pineapple fruits, leading to a dryish finish. Enjoyable.

Cask-conditioned at the Victoria, Clifton Lido, Bristol 1/11/2012. Deep brown with a decent, off-white head. Sweet, malty brew with some berry fruits, caramel, brown sugar and some warming rum in the finish. Ok.

Cask-conditioned at the Portcullis, Clifton, Bristol 18/10/2012. Amber coloured with a slight, off-white head. Aroma of hedgerow fruits, oranges and grassy hops. Flavour started sweet, before more citrus fruits and a hoppy, dryish finish. Enjoyable.

Cask-conditioned at the Green Man, Bristol 11/10/2012. Dark brown with a tight tan head. Sweet, milk chocolate, rum and roasted malts aroma. Flavour had more chocolate and some brown sugar, leading to a gently dry finish with a hint of warming rum. Excellent.

Cask@The Hillgrove Porter Store, Bristol. Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is fruity, wooden, floral and a bit herbal as well. Flavour is earthy, caramelly, floral and mild fruityness. Quite balanced, but not very exciting.
