Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 18/03/09. According to the pump clip, this is part of a seasonal series and contains gorse. Ruby red in colour with a slight, off white head. Slight aroma of red fruit and caramel. Flavour also began with some sweetness, plenty of fruit and a chewy herbal edge, which no doubt was the gorse. Ok as a one-off.

50 cl clear bottle at YNWA. Pours clear and golden orange with a small, light orange coloured and creamy head. Mild spiced, ash/tobacco hops aroma. Sweet caramel, mild, for base with a light fruity hops note on top. Rather subdued on the tobacco hops notes in the flavour compared to the aroma. Medium dry and bitter finish.

[330ml bottle from Sainsbury’s Reading] Was being sold off half price, so thought I’d give it a go. It alienated me before I’d even opened it - the bottle says that Rick Stein wanted to create an English beer that could stand alongside the Belcian greats. Given that he’s supposed to be a firm supporter of British produce, I was annoyed that he wasn’t instead mentioning the British greats. By inference he has just denigrated the whole British brewing industry. Grrr! That aside, it pours gold with a minimal white head and obvious carbonation. There is a hint of fennel in the aroma, along with some malt, but neither of these carry through into the flavour. It’s initially sweet, with citrus sourness and soggy cardboard. Some spiciness - maybe coriander seed - with some bitterness in the rather sticky finish. Annoyingly fizzy throughout. I can see it might go well with fish in his restaurant, but as a beer in its own right this just didn’t work for me at all.

Cask at the Betjeman Arms, St Pancras International as Betjeman Ale. Hazy amber with a ring of white head, not looking at its best. Served in a dimpled pint mug - don’t see many of those nowadays - clearly aimed at the tourist market. Fruit and honey aromas; more honey flavour, also sour apples and some grain; dry metallic finish. Not very pleasant. This could well be Cornish Coaster despite the "exclusive" tag.

Seems like a completely different beer - hazy gold with a trace of white head; deep citrus hop aroma; full of fruit flavours, citrus and tart apple; a strongly bitter finish. Excellent for its strength - full of flavour. (6/3/7/4/15=3.5)

Cask, Ship and Mitre, Liverpool. Golden with a thin white head. Some hop in the aroma. Insipid flavour of dusty hop and vague malt. Pretty tedious fayre really.

Dark amber color, creamy head (some nitro in the pump). The aroma is quite light. Thin body, with a good dry caramel flavor, a reasonable bitterness and a very light fruitness. In the final there is a thin line of burnt sugar, over all.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Clear, deep golden with a dense, off-white head. Aroma of malt and a little citrusy hoppiness. Good body, sweet malts and a little fruit. Lightly bitter finish. Pleasant.
