Description
Golden City Brewery was founded in 1993 by two geologists, Charlie & Janine Sturdavant. They filled the old machine shop behind their historic Golden home with used dairy tanks and Charlie began brewing German-style ales. The tasting room was originally located in the sunroom of their house and provided Red Ale and Pale Ale to the local community in half-gallon growlers and kegs. Since that time, the operation has expanded at the same location (still their home). The carriage house has become the tasting room, the backyard is the beer garden. The brewery is still in the machine shop, but a second level was added inside. All the old “frankenbrew” equipment has been replaced with real beer fermenters and a slightly used gas-fired kettle. The brewery produces those now legendary Red & Pale Ales, in addition to a few other brews.

Cask at Great British Beer Festival 2014, Olympia, London. A dark amber coloured pour with a thin white head on top. Sweet, boozy, caramel aroma. Tastes similar, sweet, boozy, caramel, sticky, slightly hoppy. Not a typical DIPA but I still enjoyed it.

Cask gravity at GBBF 2014. It pours deep amber with minimal head. The nose sweet, sugary, candy, sweet orange, butterscotch and toffee. The taste is sweet, toffee, syrup, candy, apple, booze, resin, cheap coffee candy and wood with a sweet, oily finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Sweet butterscotch and residual sugar...not what I want in a double ipa...

Cask - Sweet almost berry like malts. Cloudy maroon with a small white head. Syrupy caramel and a very rich long finish. Hops really don’t surface and it becomes more like a fruity and sweet Barleywine. Still nice though.

Pours hazy light amber with airy white head. Clear aroma of fruit, yeast, and hops. Sweetish flavour of malt and yeast, with flowery notes and bitter, hoppy touches. Sour-sweetish aftertaste. OK.

Chugging from a bomber in Red Rocks parking lot before Wilco show. Deep brown/black appearance with a brown head. Fairly chocolate, espresso, vanilla, oaty aroma. A bit creamy, vanilla, milky, dark chocolate, light coffee flavor. Not that hard to drink but nothing special.

Tap @ Golden City Brewery. A little hazy, golden appearance with an off white head. Spicy, resiny, grapefruit hoppy, a bit toasty aroma. Tangy, a little soapy, spicy, moderately resiny, bud, orange/grapefruit citrusy flavor. I got an undesirable soap note note I did in the brown but it was otherwise decent.
