Description
Golden City Brewery was founded in 1993 by two geologists, Charlie & Janine Sturdavant. They filled the old machine shop behind their historic Golden home with used dairy tanks and Charlie began brewing German-style ales. The tasting room was originally located in the sunroom of their house and provided Red Ale and Pale Ale to the local community in half-gallon growlers and kegs. Since that time, the operation has expanded at the same location (still their home). The carriage house has become the tasting room, the backyard is the beer garden. The brewery is still in the machine shop, but a second level was added inside. All the old “frankenbrew” equipment has been replaced with real beer fermenters and a slightly used gas-fired kettle. The brewery produces those now legendary Red & Pale Ales, in addition to a few other brews.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Pinball. Pours a clear pale yellow with a small white head. Clean, sweet malty nose. Very light body, a subtle and very dry maltiness with quite some sulphur and a dry and hoppy finish. Extremely clean and quafable, and one of the most true to style US Kölsches I’ve ever had. 290512

Bottle @ home. 2011 Evan Williams barrel. Pours a deep black appearance with a dark brown head but not super thick like some barrel-aged stouts. Very rich whiskey (reminds me of a Rock Bottom whiskey stout or similar), light caramel and vanilla, some oak, mostly whiskey and roasty dark chocolate malts in the nose. Besides the whiskey, there’s a rich caramel/chocolate malty character to the flavor in addition to a somewhat hot, whiskey, oaky taste. A little hot and not super smooth. 7//4//7//4//13 (3.5)

Bottle @ home. Buffalo Trace barrel. Honestly, both versions have pretty short fills- barely up to the neck of the bomber. Black appearance with a big bubbly, dark brown head with moderate retention. Aroma is more tame than the EW10 version with more toffee and caramel along with some whiskey, vanilla, oak, and rich maltiness. Actually, this one has a pretty nice aroma. Pretty rich toffee, vanilla, caramel, whiskey flavor with some light bitterness and a bit of a hot finish. Rich flavor but pretty tasty. Not nearly as boozy as the EW version. 8//4//8//4//15 (3.9)
