Description
Golden City Brewery was founded in 1993 by two geologists, Charlie & Janine Sturdavant. They filled the old machine shop behind their historic Golden home with used dairy tanks and Charlie began brewing German-style ales. The tasting room was originally located in the sunroom of their house and provided Red Ale and Pale Ale to the local community in half-gallon growlers and kegs. Since that time, the operation has expanded at the same location (still their home). The carriage house has become the tasting room, the backyard is the beer garden. The brewery is still in the machine shop, but a second level was added inside. All the old “frankenbrew” equipment has been replaced with real beer fermenters and a slightly used gas-fired kettle. The brewery produces those now legendary Red & Pale Ales, in addition to a few other brews.

Tap at My Brother’s Bar - cloudy dark red - they nailed the style fairly well on this one, but some flaws keep it from being great - a fairly sturdy, sweet malt base, with notes of toffee and caramel - moderate hop bitterness - a sort of astringent, metallic character through the middle keeps it from being as enjoyable as it could be - lingering, sticky malt sweetness - fairly robust - okay.

Tap at Falling Rock - served in a pint glass - a strange beer, this - turbid reddish pour, with a soft, fluffy , head - a lot of treacle sweetness up front, with some fruity notes of prune, fig, and black cherry - sweetness actually intensifies after that, but the finish cuts this with a quite bizarre, almost malt vinegar-like acidity, and an almost , earthy, leathery quality - the counterpoint between extreme sweetness and the subsequent acidity make it hard to finish this - there are some interesting elements here, but it doesn’t come together that well.

Tap at Falling Rock - quite a nice brew - like a weizenbock with a hint of rye - a mild phenolic profiile, with clove being the most prominent - tangy, earthy wheat character is complimented fairly well with some mildly sour rye character - the rye also works well with the yeasty qualities of the beer - moderate sweetness and hints of roasted nuts - semi-tart finish - quite a quaffable ale.
