Pours deep orange from the bottle. A thin, frothy head lingers. Aroma is nectarine with herbal almost grassy undertones. Taste has a rather plain, unrewarding bitterness that, while not overly intense, fails to offer much in the way of accompanying tones that draw one deeper. Lingering notes greenish, not fully ripe peach or nectarine. Body is medium, texture a touch watery up front. Overall quite drinkable but rather odd for a pale ale and not enough here to make me want another.

Hopfig alkoholischer Beginn. Dunkelmalzig, trocken karamellig, weiche steigende Bitterkeit. Spritzig aber unsüffig, dunkel malzig bleibend, der Hopfen wirkt zeitweise drückend. Langer bitter-malziger Nachhall. Okay. 9/8/10/9/7/9

Can at home. The pour showed that this is not black, but very dark brown. Not much aroma and the taste was that of a lager with toasted dark malt. A good mouthfeel from the malt, but totally lacking in flavour. It was all very dull, which I find to be true for most of the And Union beers. Good concept, but a load of old rubbish.

Can at home. A very dark beer in the glass and very cloudy. The nose was yeast and that pretty much dominated the flavour. I question whether there was a sediment in the can that I should have avoided, but that is just hindsight. It tasted very German and I didn't get the hops that I would have expected in an IPA.

Can at home. A murky pour with not much aroma, but it was served well chilled. The taste was that of a typical German beer and not something that I would describe as a pale ale. All very pleasant, but not special.

Can from Waitrose, Caversham. Dark brown and very fizzy with a beige head. Rather metallic, dirty aroma. The taste is much better with malt, brown toast and a little hint of raisin sweetness. Grew on me after an unconvincing start.
