Description
Our Brewery’s desire is to create that perfect moment of reflection with a sparkling pint of fine English beer in the bastion of Englishness itself, the Pub. Put together, we think there is nothing better.

It is, of course, fitting that the site of the new Joule’s Brewery lies behind an original Joule’s Public House, the Red Lion, in the heart of the medieval town of Market Drayton. Built on traditional tower brewery lines the building is a landmark in the area and the sight of malt being hoisted up the front of the building often draws an audience. The tower design was favoured in the 19th century when electricity supplies were intermittent, and raw materials once raised to the top of the building could fall by gravity rather than relying on pumps.

The brewery, completed in 2010, is traditional in its design. It incorporates an infusion mash tun with Steele’s masher, copper with a “cat and mouse” contents gauge, a hopback to allow the use of whole hops and “ale” fermenters suited to top cropping yeast, so is perfectly equipped for the creation of characterful beers.

Joule’s is a small Brewery that mainly serves its own collection of 40 Brewery Taps as well as a small local group of loyal Freetrade customers and Partners. Our Taphouses are our pride and joy and we spend all our time thinking how we can make each the best it can be. The strength of each lies with the people who run it, our Tenants who run our Brewery Taps as their own business.

Cask @ The Dolphin, Shrewsbury. Pours dark, one could say black I suppose, good creamed tan head. Aroma is of chocolate, continuing to taste, very smooth, creamy mouthfeel, gentle lactose with a mild chocolate character running throughout. Served perhaps a little too warm but otherwise fine.

Cask at Rose & Crown, Stafford. Pours a slightly hazy pale yellow with small white head and excellent lacing. Summer fruits to the fore in a strong aroma, together with lemongrass and floral hops. In the mouth it is sweet, smooth and fruity. Flavour has summer fruits, tangerine, mango and hints of elderflower. Becomes more hoppy (floral ) after a while. Finish is fruity ans slightly sticky. This is rather nice – much better than I expected from the description “golden ale” !

Almost missed this one because I din’t realise it wasn’t the same as the previous Penny Pincher. Finally managed to catch up with it on caskat the Mere in Alsager. Pours “bitter brown” with a small off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has nalts and fudge plus a hint of autumn fruits. In the mouth it is sweet and malty, and after a while flavours of toffee and malt come through, plus traces of vanilla and floral hops. Overall a bit watery as well. Finish is mainly sweet but with some bitterness too. Not bad at all.

Cask at Coopers Tavern, Burton on Trent. Pours a hazy pale straw with a small white head and excellent lacing. Is slow to settle. The aroma features citrus and lemon. In the mouth there is a brief burst of watery sweetness, before it’s quickly replaced by lemon sharpness. There’s also grapefruit and hops (traditional and floral) plus some underlying biscuit crunchiness. Finish is bitter yet fruity, with quite a bit of stickiness. This is excellent – not quite as bitter as Jaipur, but getting there.
