Description
Our Brewery’s desire is to create that perfect moment of reflection with a sparkling pint of fine English beer in the bastion of Englishness itself, the Pub. Put together, we think there is nothing better.

It is, of course, fitting that the site of the new Joule’s Brewery lies behind an original Joule’s Public House, the Red Lion, in the heart of the medieval town of Market Drayton. Built on traditional tower brewery lines the building is a landmark in the area and the sight of malt being hoisted up the front of the building often draws an audience. The tower design was favoured in the 19th century when electricity supplies were intermittent, and raw materials once raised to the top of the building could fall by gravity rather than relying on pumps.

The brewery, completed in 2010, is traditional in its design. It incorporates an infusion mash tun with Steele’s masher, copper with a “cat and mouse” contents gauge, a hopback to allow the use of whole hops and “ale” fermenters suited to top cropping yeast, so is perfectly equipped for the creation of characterful beers.

Joule’s is a small Brewery that mainly serves its own collection of 40 Brewery Taps as well as a small local group of loyal Freetrade customers and Partners. Our Taphouses are our pride and joy and we spend all our time thinking how we can make each the best it can be. The strength of each lies with the people who run it, our Tenants who run our Brewery Taps as their own business.

27/11/2019. Keg at the Glebe, Stoke-on-Trent. Pours clear golden with a small white head. Aroma of sweet malt, straw, light hop, fruit and grass. Quite heavy sweetness, minimal bitterness. Moderate body, oily/sticky texture, above average carbonation. It’s better than most mass produced lagers but not quality craft.

27/11/2019. Cask at the Glebe, Stoke-on-Trent. Pours clear amber brown with a lasting creamy off-white head. Aroma of damson jam, sweet malt, dried fruits, toffee, chocolate, bread and vague tobacco notes. Medium sweetness and light bitterness. Medium body, slight oily texture, soft carbonation. Quite a tasty brew, certainly a cut above the other two I just had here.

27/11/2019. Cask at the Glebe, Stoke-on-Trent. Pours clear golden with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of ritz biscuits, malt, hops, fruit and grass. Moderate sweetness and bitterness. Moderate body, slight oily and watery texture, soft carbonation. Got better as the cheesy biscuit aroma subsided.

Cask at Cross Keys, Chester Pours a very dark ruby red with a tight cream head. Nice and strong nose majoring on dark fruits. Frutiiness again in the mouth, with dark fruit and raspberries but also liquorice and toffee notes. Unexpectedly the finish is sweet and malty.

Cask at Rose & Crown, Stafford – not listed in RateBeer. Another beer I’ve drunk on many occasions in the past, but never rated before. [ My friend variously refers to it as Mumbling Skunk, Stumbling Drunk or Rumbling Punk !]. Anyway, it pours a reddish copper with a small cream head. Nose reminds me of nothing so much as bread rolls and cream cheese ! A bit more conventional in the mouth where it is creamy with a balance of malts and hops plus hints of orange and caramel. Finish is more of the same really. A nice session beer, but not outstanding
