Description
Burdock brewery set up shop in what used to be an old Portuguese chicken restaurant, and they transformed the space into an artist-driven bar/restaurant/music hall/microbrewery run by a group of musicians and music lovers. They offer a rotating list of clean pale ales, complex saisons, crisp pilsners, zippy sours, and beer-wine hybrids that are all brewed in house.

Pale salmon colour. No head. On the nose, it's a bit spicy, but then on the palate deep acidity, and a hint of that cherry - sweet or no, I couldn't tell. This is a fun series.

(375ml bottle from the brewery bottle shop) Pours nearly clear medium red with a small but stable pink-white head. Aroma of vinous blueberry and medium bodied Pinot, herbal and spicy, accents of blackberry, moderately funky, jammy sweetness but with a little acidity, some funky accents and moderate barrel as well. Flavour is definitely quite deep berries in a rather unique way, lots of earthy rich blueberry and red wine grape quality, the blackberry is just in support rather than dominant as usual, lots of berry skin tannins, some spice hits and dried leaves, quite some woodiness playing with the skins and giving a bitter astringent bite in the finish, some berry pips too, and a little dusty back-end funk. Medium bodied, slightly oily, soft carbonation. All together very wine like, more than expected, with the barrel aged saisons showing through well under the fruit.

(375ml bottle from the Burdock bottle shop, Toronto) Pours very hazy pale straw gold with a small but constantly filled head and big champagne bubbles. Aroma is funky and bright with some grape must, melon and light floral pear, touch of lemon citrus and a wet sulphurous blanket. Flavour is crisp and dry, with tight mineral natural white wine, grape skins, light lemon peel, zippy lightly sweet pear, moderate tannin, chalk, some Brett leather, finishing bone dry and cider-like, quite mineral. Lightish body with high sparkling wine carb. Very fresh and interesting, the Brett kind of runs away with the nose but the palate is the combination of natural wine, perry and wild ale you'd hope. Good aperitif flavour.

Bottle: Poured a clear red color ale with a medium size foamy head with minimal retention and light lacing. Aroma of tart raspberry notes with some oak and vinous notes is enjoyable. Taste is a good mix of tart raspberry notes with some oak and vinous notes with light acidic notes. Body is about average with OK carbonation. Not bad but lacking some cohesion and not of the best grape/beer blend from this brewery.
