Description
Mescan Brewery is named after Mescan the monk who was St. Patrick's friend and personal brewer. It is situated on the slopes of Croagh Patrick and is owned and operated by Bart Adons and Cillian Ó Móráin, two Westport vets who have been friends and colleagues for nearly 20 years. The pair spent four years perfecting their original recipes inspired by the beers of Belgium, Bart's homeland before starting to brew commercially in 2013. The water for Mescan beers comes from deep underneath Croagh Patrick via a spring beside the brewery. Malts, hops and yeast for the beer come from Belgium.

Bottled 330ml (Beergium, BB I/2018)
Slightly hazy orange color, small white head. Aroma has fruity Belgi yeast and peach, a bit of cardboard. Light-bodied, crisp. Front feels a bit watery then belgi yeast, orange, light grassy hops. Feels quite Belgian for being from Ireland. Unfortunately not so interesting. A bit cardboardish and thin.

330ml bottle shared between three of us on an Irish beer tasting night at my place on 11th Nov 2016. Pink hue to the head, red bodied. Semi-sour cherries rule the brew from start to finish: a very good ’Belgian Kriek’ styled beer in my opinion.

330ml bottle shared between two of us on an Irish beer tasting night at my place on 11th Nov 2016. Amber pour, with a slight red hue to it’s colour, off-white topping. Maltiness alongside red berries in the nose, taste semi-sweet and similar flavours to the aromas: malty molasses and red berries. I liked it.

Bright clear amber beer, good cream colour head. Palate is airy, smooth and has decent carbonation. Fluffy malts, sweetish with mild fluffy malt cream. Typical tripel spice. Banana esters, mildly bitter. Touch of dried friuts. Tangy semi dry finish brings an unexpected sharp peach. Pretty drinkable.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Ben’s place. Thanks Tom L. Hazy deep orange-amber. Aroma of caramel, lots of fruitiness, fruit compote, vanilla, some yeast, a bit of alcohol. Very sweet flavor with caramel, fruit compote, some spiciness, some wood, vanilla, yeast, some alcohol, and a bitterish note. Medium-bodied. So-so, not very fun to drink.
