Description
Wylam Brewery was set up in a disused dairy on a farm near Heddon on the Wall in May 2000 by John Boyle and Robin Leighton driven by their passion for real ale. The brewery grew rapidly on the strength of the quality of its ales, winning awards at festivals around the UK. They outgrew the original 1000L plant in 2006 and brought on-stream a new 3500L plant in August in a bespoke barn conversion. Since then they have enjoyed continued strong growth. In Summer 2016, the brewery moved to its current location at the same time expanding to a 30BBL plant.

Can. Near opaque dark brown beer, light comes through the edges. Good bubbly tan head. Quite an airy palate, semi dry, good fine minerally carbonation. The malts don't feel heavy for a 12.5% beer. A pleasant light smokiness rides over a touch of malt cream. Soft caramel underneath. Not getting any chocolate based flavours here. Ripe fruits on the back end layered with mild hop fruits and modest bitterness. Pretty light and crisp finish. A curious but tasty affair. If you had given this to me blind and told me it was a barleywine, I would have believed you. It's also pretty light all things considered. The flavours layer nicely, all of which makes it dangerously drinkable.

Cask at White Horse, Hedgerley, Bucks. An amber coloured pour with almost no head on top. Sweet, fruity, caramel, bitter/sweet. Rather unbalanced boozy effort which is a surprise for Wylam.

Keg at The Antelope, Godalming. Opaque cola brown. Foamy tan head. Aroma has coffee with a vanilla edge. Flavourwise it's sour with some bitterness. Then a sweetness appears into the finish. Medium bodied. Creamy. Soft-average carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Noice.

Keg at The Antelope, Godalming. Hazy-opaque amber. Thin foamy white head. Aroma is floral and resinous. Flavourwise it has a sugary sweetness over resinous bitterness. Underlying chewy malts. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Yeah.
