500ml bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours hazy dirty blonde with a thick, fluffy white head. The aroma is earthy, woody, slightly herbal, spicy, hay, bread and cereal. The taste is firmly dry, punchy bitterness which lingers, earthy, toasty grains, woody, cereal, some stone fruit, dried apricot and hearty bready malt with a drying finish. Average body and fairly high, foamy carbonation. A hearty malty ale.

Scotch (wee heavy) by this craft brewery in Aberdeenshire, enjoyed from a bottle at the Silver Darling, a commendable fish restaurant in the historical Footdee port town in Aberdeen. Medium sized, firm, pale greyish beige, irregularly edged, lacing head on a hazy ruddy chestnut brown beer with beautiful 'autumny' copper glow. Aroma of warm toast in the morning, caramel candy, sticky toffee pudding, hazelnut purée, ground almonds, a whiff of coffee, dried fig, fried pear, medlar, 'pepernoten', raisin bread, wet tree leaves. Sweetish onset, some yeasty-fruity notes (pear, medlar, fig, dried apricot), sharpish carbonation; slick mouthfeel, a tad oily, caramelly malts with hazelnutty and toasty edges, bittersweet with an almondy hint and more brown-breadiness in the finish when the yeast deposit is added. Vague clove and dried fruit effects are coming with this, paired with leafy hops and a subtle whisky-ish alcohol glow. It may have been the beautiful setting, looking out on the harbour through the large windows of the restaurant, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one as being among the best beers I had on the whole trip. Reminiscent of Orkney's Skullsplitter and the like, with smooth and balanced character as well as some ornamental yeasty notes, yet not to the extent that the overall effect becomes overly 'Belgian', if you get my drift - instead, remaining very - delightfully - malt-forward.

Bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours slightly hazy copper with a medium fluffy white head. The aroma is bitter of zingy grapefruit, rindy, woody, leather, toasty grains and brown bread. The taste is crisp, firmly dry, woody bitterness, earth, pithy, zesty, grapefruit, pomelo, bitter rind, resin and toasty grains with a zesty finale. Average body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Decent enough, but I definitely prefer the blonde.

Bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours clear honey - amber with a decent frothy white cap. The aroma is sweet - sour, dried fruits, berry, nutty, cereal, smokey vibes, dried leaves and leather. The taste is firmly dry, toothy, chewy, bitter, dull acidity, sourness, dried fruits, red berry, leather, toasted nut, wood embers and vinous accents with a drying finale. Average body and soft, yet fluffy carbonation. An interesting offering for sure. Novel.

Bottle, gift from secret Santa. Black body with a few flecks beneath a thin beige head that slowly fades. Low carbon. No lacing. Aroma of soft whisky notes and prunes. Flavour of coffee, salted dark chocolate and sultanas. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. This is a tasty beer that hides the ABV well.

Cask at t Grill, Aberdeen. It pours darkest brown with a thick and frothy khaki head. The aroma is soft, sweetish, dried fruits, toasted fruit cake, dark roasted malt, raisin, fig, plum, cacao nibs, coffee grounds and a touch of festive spice. The taste is firmly dry roasted malt, bitter - sweet character, umami, liquorice root, angelica, festive spice, fragrant, cacao nibs, charcoal, burnt toast and toasted fruit cake with a drying, bitter finish. Average body and moderate cask carbonation. Works rather well. I'm always disappointed by the lack of local dark cask beer, so this is a welcome surprise.
