Description
Great beer is messy.

From the outset in 1997, Dark Horse Brewery was fueled by a relentless pursuit of excellence and creativity in brewing, with an unflinching disregard for anything that didn’t captivate the taste buds.

In truth, the journey has been filled with adversity, highs, lows, and even a bit of TV show fame. Some might even label the odyssey as reckless. Yet, it was through this tumultuous journey that Dark Horse Brewery honed its award-winning craft and culture. Producing remarkable IPAs, beloved ales, big bold stouts, sought-after session beers, wild events, and boasting more than 5000 mug club members.

Fast forward 27 years, now guided by new leadership under managing partner Chuck Mascari Jr. Dark Horse Brewing Co. remains one of the few lasting independent forces in the Michigan craft brewing scene with a brand impact embraced across the globe. Every month, over 1,000 hardcore #darkhorsenation beer fans check in to our brews on Untappd, from all over the world!

Now, we’re not only a craft brewery, but also a small distillery and small winemaker. Our Beer Garten is a unique entertainment venue for up-and-coming artists. For patrons and Marshall visitors, we offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner at our Commons Market and Taproom, and open our Beer Garten from May through October. There are six major events at the brewery every year starting with Winterfest Beer Olympics and ending the year with an 80’s themed, 4ELF Party!

With a blend of rebellion, responsibility, and boundless curiosity infused into every brew, Dark Horse Brewing Co. beers continue to stand as a testament to our unwavering commitment to exceptional quality and taste. Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear toasted amber with a small off-white head that dissipates. Strong coffee aromas with some vanilla, toasted malt and faint bread. More of the same on the palate. Coffee, vanilla, toffee and a light burned malt taste at the end. A bit thin in body, but a fun beer with lunch.

2021 can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of beige head that lingers. Lovely aromas of dark chocolate, bourbon, cinnamon and chili pepper on the nose. Palate shows loads of cinnamon, bourbon and dark chocolate. Flavors come through as advertised. Great price point as well. All the cinnamon...very underrated beer for the price.

Super dark and rich deep brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall, oily deep brown head that fades pretty quickly above the rich, almost black note, but the brown comes through at probably around 90 per cent opaque - very deep, rich, dark and opaque. Aroma of rich spices with allspice, aniseed, canella, nutmeg, star anise and a dash of licorice and molasses here - this is rich, at least in the nose and the sugars shine through as well. Full-bodied; Rich roasted malts, oatmeal and grain pop through and around everything else with a deep richness of molasses, grain and pungent spices with a light dash of allspice and canella here, with some bitterness on the outside with a dry and almost herbal element, with a big earthy and rustic quality with a light dose of sugars towards the end. Aftertaste is pungent and showing some spices with a lot of toffee, oatmeal and bitterness from the malts, with some alcohol shining through as well. Overall, a very nice, but rich, pure stout with a lot of spice and sweet components that hits nicely, especially when it's cold outside - much more so in the great state of Michigan compared to this state of Florida! Still, great to try all the way down here given that I've never had it in my home state of Michigan, but did find it on sale down here on vacation in Florida! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased yesterday from Knightly Spirits in Orlando (Orange Blossom Trail), Florida on 04-November-2021 for US$2,84 sampled a day later in my hotel room here in Lake Buena Vista, Florida after exploring EPCOT Center for the day for my son's fourth birthday on 05-November-2021.

Pours very hazy light yellow-orange. It has a tropical fruit and hop aroma. The flavor is fruit forward with mangoes apparent. It’s sweet up front with some resin accompanying mild to moderate hop bitterness.

On tap at GTOM. Pours a hazy pink orange with small off white head. The aroma is berry, passionfruit, wheat, plum. Thin body, passionfruit, berry, lacto, wheat, light tartness, good.

12 oz can. Pours black with a tan head. Chocolatey molasses aroma with a cinnamon overtone. Cinnamon and chili peppers come across more in the flavor, blending very nicely into the chocolate and molasses, with bourbon and some roast. Quite sweet, but the chili peppers & cinnamon balance it nicely. Excellent.

Multiple 2021 cans from Livonia Liquor. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of beige head that dissipates. Bourbon, brownie and coffee aromas on the nose. More of the same on the palate with bourbon and brownie really standing out. Smooth with warming alcohol on the finish. This is probably the best BBA Plead the 5th I've had in years. Really nice batch.
