Description
Great beer is messy.

From the outset in 1997, Dark Horse Brewery was fueled by a relentless pursuit of excellence and creativity in brewing, with an unflinching disregard for anything that didn’t captivate the taste buds.

In truth, the journey has been filled with adversity, highs, lows, and even a bit of TV show fame. Some might even label the odyssey as reckless. Yet, it was through this tumultuous journey that Dark Horse Brewery honed its award-winning craft and culture. Producing remarkable IPAs, beloved ales, big bold stouts, sought-after session beers, wild events, and boasting more than 5000 mug club members.

Fast forward 27 years, now guided by new leadership under managing partner Chuck Mascari Jr. Dark Horse Brewing Co. remains one of the few lasting independent forces in the Michigan craft brewing scene with a brand impact embraced across the globe. Every month, over 1,000 hardcore #darkhorsenation beer fans check in to our brews on Untappd, from all over the world!

Now, we’re not only a craft brewery, but also a small distillery and small winemaker. Our Beer Garten is a unique entertainment venue for up-and-coming artists. For patrons and Marshall visitors, we offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner at our Commons Market and Taproom, and open our Beer Garten from May through October. There are six major events at the brewery every year starting with Winterfest Beer Olympics and ending the year with an 80’s themed, 4ELF Party!

With a blend of rebellion, responsibility, and boundless curiosity infused into every brew, Dark Horse Brewing Co. beers continue to stand as a testament to our unwavering commitment to exceptional quality and taste. Tap at Craft back in April. Sketchy rating, I had had a few. Aroma is soy sauce, roast malt, bit of light coffee. Taste is chocolatey, roasty malt, bit of cream. Tasty and nice.

Deep hazy golden and copper coloured body with a peach-like glow, all with almost no head at all. Aroma of grass, coriander seed, a lot of wheat and light citrus notes as well - strong throughout, but leaving a hole in the terms of the scent and the style. Light to Medium-bodied; Super dry flavours at first with the big medicinal bite and a dash of hay, grass, light funk and a dash of odd fruit notes. Aftertaste then ensues and for most folks, the best part of the evening is during the front portion and insted of hearing about the funk and complexities of the breweries. Overall, a deep and horribly bittered and pungent note of grain and light spices that definitely show this as either a Belgian Style IPA or a deeper normal IPA. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine In Fairfax, Virginia on 1-September-2019 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 07-September-2019, while enjoying a Michigan beer after watching Michigan [University of] play football earlier in the day.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned in 7/2019. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger fairly dense/creamy/rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big juicy, lightly tart/tangy red/black raspberries, fruit skin/seeds, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, wood, herbal, grass, pepper and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of raspberries, dark/roast/black/bready malts, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of big juicy, lightly tart/tangy red/black raspberries, fruit skin/seeds, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, wood, herbal, grass, pepper and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, woody, grassy, peppery, roast, charred bitterness; and light fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy red/black raspberries, fruit skin/seeds, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, wood, herbal, grass, pepper and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of raspberries, dark/roast/black/bready malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a fantastic roast/hop bitter/sweet, and tart/tangy fruit balance; with no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and tart/tangy fruit. Medium-plus carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, fairly sticky/chalky, and lightly acidic/tangy/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is an outstanding fruited imperial black ale. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of raspberries, dark/roast/black/bready malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV, with the mellowly bitter/tart/tangy/drying finish. Fantastic soft feel for the style; not overly bitter/charred, or overdone on fruit. Awesome balance of juicy/jammy raspberries and rich malt complexity; with great earthy hop presence/balance. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and really impressive base style example.

Bottle. Dark brown color. Roast, smoke and a hint of chocolate in the aroma. Toffee flavor with beechwood smoke, notes of caramel and milk chocolate. Sweetness is carefully matched by the smoke. Not too much alcohol. Nice one.

Bottle. brown color, cloudy. Malt, toffee and cappucino in the aroma. Malty sweet sugary flavor with toffee, caramel, hints of yeast. Coffee. Thinnish, not the thick maltiness of German doppelbocks. Just a hint of alcohol.
