This brew is a murky dark brownish-amber color with a very thin off-white head. Minimal lacing as well. Strong toasted malt aroma with some caramel and raisin. Rich body with a good malty flavor that is smoky and sweet. Caramel and chocolate flavors are present, and the alcohol and hops bite adds a nice dimension. The finish is sweet malt at first but a dry and bitter coffee character asserts itself pretty quickly. Complex and enjoyable from start to finish.

This beer pours a shiny black color with a thin light beige head that turns wispy quickly. Very little lacing apparent. Roasted malt and caramel aroma. Medium-bodied and smooth with a pleasant roasted character. Coffee, malt and hops flavors make this one enjoyable. The finish is hoppy and leaves a charred wood aftertaste. One of the better Porters I have tasted in awhile.

From a growler: Pours a flat black color with a medium thick and foamy brown head. Sticky patches of lacing. Strong and smoky roasted malt and coffee aroma. The body is rich and smooth and the smoky character is consistent but not overbearing. Roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee flavors mesh very well. The finish is dry and smoky with a fair amount of hops peeking through. Not really anything to complain about with this one.

The beer gods smiled upon me when Willblake gifted this too me, thanks a lot Jon. I have been shaving this till I could try it with my smoke loving buddy. Fridged for 45 minutes. split into two small goblet glasses. Pours opaque black, actually absorbs light. No head and just a ghost of a brown lacing. Aroma is strong on the peat smoke with present chocolate roastiness. I mean this is a perfect smoked stout. Has both characteristics present. Taste is smokey with a sweet aftertaste. Its actualy a pretty light beer, with alight mouthfeel. A weird dicothmy. Low bitterness.

Even with a vigorous pour, it’s difficult to yield much head. Perhaps a half-finger in height, old-beige colored and rapidly fizzling to a ring. Glassy, brass-golden body has some light peach and lemon tints. Clarity is medium-high to high, with a very small amount of sediment left in the bottle. Bubbles rise listlessly in the liquid, little/no lacing is created.
Very warming, sharp and pungent nose displays very high fermentation temps (or whatever it is, something is generating very apparent, sharp, dry, peach, banana and nectarine esters, with plenty of raw alcohol). Clove and pepper phenols are apparent as well, though they begin to dissolve in to a sweet, candi sugar-meets thick honey blanket of sugariness. Either the hops are rather dusty/old smelling and something like saaz or there is a definite note of light veggies created by the yeast. One can’t be sure. The more it warms, the more the alcohol warms and the fruitiness runs rampant. Too much musty/spoiled veggie-like flavor on the very end, very meaty-like.
The flavor is both highly sweet but yet staunchly alcoholic and sharp on the end. Very little cohesion between the malt, alcohol and esters. Sugar additions seem rather apparent and add heat without body, allowing the beer to thin out on the end and become messy with sharp, somewhat acidic notes of esters and alcohol. Carbonation is too low, as well, or perhaps more accurately, too loose. Not engaging and tight at all, allowing too much sweetness up front and wateriness on the end. Bit of meatiness on the end, perhaps vegetal in nature. Alcoholic, overly estery/phenolic, too much residual sugar. It really strikes me as being not properly lagered, though it’s hard to believe that Dark Horse would be guilty of that. Whatever the case, there are compound problems.

bottle - Pours hazy yellowish-orange with almost no head. It has an assertive citrus and yeast aroma and a sweet, citrus flavor. The medium body and light carbonation gives it a pleasantly smooth mouthfeel. The finish is light and mildly sweet.

draft at the brewpub - Pours black with a medium, enduring tan head that leaves great lacing. Roasted malts dominate the aroma and lead into a very nice roast flavor with some coffee flavors coming through. A full body and oily mouthfeel slides into a moderately hopped finish.

draft at the brewpub - Pours black with a thin, fading, tan head. The aroma has roasted malts and lots of blueberries. Roasted malt and blueberries carry the flavor with some mild chocolate notes. Full bodied, lightly carbonated, and smoothing going down, this sweet stout is a quality brew.

This brew pours a yellow-gold color with a thin off-white head and spotty lacing. The aroma is like raspberry sherbet. Light-bodied and crisp with tart artificial raspbetry flavor and an underlying bitterness. The finish is fruity with a bit of malt, and the raspberry aftertaste does not last. This beer is passable and unmemorable.

A pitch black beer with a slight brown shine underneath a dying brown head. The aroma is very lightly roasted. The flavor is sweet and very roasted malty combined with notes of oatmeal, and lighter notes of citrus, but also with a light acidity. Not that powerful a flavor - but good.
