Description
Sudwerk Brewing Co. was founded in 1989 by two German descendants determined to share the high-quality, familiar taste of true German lagers. Since then, we have been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of traditional lager making for 30 years; pioneering the craft beer industry along the way.
We choose to brew lagers not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because the end result will serve to refresh and bring the best of our energies and skill, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to drink, with others too.
Our beer making processes are rooted in traditional German brewing methods but blended with modern, West-Coast craft beer practices. We are not afraid of the time consuming and difficult nature of lagers but instead find it to be an exhilarating challenge. We showcase clean, crisp yeast character, powerful flavor-packed hop bombs, and beautiful malt backbones; all on a lager frame. This is not the dull can of lager beer you think you know.

Bottle courtesy of Håkan. Pours very hazy deep yellow with a frothy white head that leaves lots of thick sticky lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is fruity and grassy with crackers, lemon juice, grapefruit juice, mango, papaya, pineapple, passion fruit, star fruit, moist grass, pine needles, minerals and lemon zest. Taste is tiny sweet, sour, slightly grassy and crazy fruity. Mouthfeel is dry, tart and medium bodied. Finish is sour with crackers, white bread, lemon juice, grapefruit juice, mango, papaya, passion fruit, star fruit, white grapes, moist grass, pine needles, minerals, barnyard and lemon zest. Intense dry hopped sour saison. The fruitiness is just mind blowing and the rest of the beer with its barrel character and funk is pretty close to perfect. Actually this beer is pretty close to perfect!!! --- Beer merged from original tick of Fünke Hop Farm on 11 Dec 2015 at 20:54 - Score: 10. Original review text: Holy shit! The hop profile. The funky barrel treatment. The base saison. Perfection!!!!

Draught at Harry’s hofbrau during a Sudwerk event. Aromas of lemon, slight must and other citrus are overtly showing. Hazy (purée) goldent with full white head that slowly retreats to a dusting over the top. Taste is well balanced mixture of citrus, tart and chaffed wheat providing a slight spice. Fantastic!

Bottle. Hazy orange with a small white head. Citrus aroma, a bit zesty, with a caramel note and some salt. Flavor is sweetish and tart, with citrus, some malt, a grainy note, a bit of caramel, salty note, and a faint bitterish hint. Light to medium-bodied. Quite pleasant.

Flaske 355ml fra Systembolaget Kiruna. Drukket i Skibotn 20 Aug 15. Mørk amber. Lavt skum som raskt blir film. Søt plommearoma. Smaken litt karamell. Litt syrlighet etter hvert.

The beer is a light orangey tannish color. The first pour was a bit cloudy, while the second was more so. Smallish white head, sorta fizzy. Bubbles dissipate after a minute and leave no lacing. The aroma has one of the best strawberry flavors that I’ve found in a beer. It’s bright, sweet and smooth with no harsh acidity. Some peachy, apricoty flavor with some tropical action knocking about. Mango, guava, papaya. Light but nice funk. Some yogurty lacto flavor. A little bit of oak. The taste has a very pleasant light to medium tart character. More lacto flavor. Lots of berries. Fairly oaky. Solid vinous flavor. Some funk, particularly in the finish. It’s cleanly sweet up front but dries out completely in the finish. Light pucker. Light mouthfeel. Really nice beer. I’d love to see Sudwerk make more of this beer and similar stuff.

The beer is a very dark brown with a small tan head. The bubbles dissipate to nothing after a minute or two. Too dark to tell the clarity of the beer. The aroma has a big creamy vanilla and chocolate flavor. Some roast. It’s quite stout-like. You only get a little hint of that doppelbock blend of bready malt and clean lager flavor in the background of the beer. Rich caramel. Milder oak than expected. Taste has a really nice creamy vanilla flavor. Full of rich malt sweetness. Lots of chocolate. Cinnamon kicks in towards the middle and the finish has a gently tingly chili spice. Toasty malt goodness throughout. Spice is mild to moderate. Fairly sweet but good clean sweetness. More oak than in the aroma, still not a ton. Round mouthfeel. Chewy maltiness. Surprisingly good beer.

Bottle shared by the brewer - thanks! Pours clear mahogany, small tan head, dissipates fairly quickly with some lacing. Aroma is really heavy cocoa, faint hints of vanilla and honestly not a lot else. Flavor is also very cocoa forward with hints of vanilla. Perhaps a very faint bit of chili on the far finish. The coffee has almost completely disappeared. Medium sweet, roasty and light bitter. Medium body. This still drinks well, but I bet it was much more complex and interesting in its prime.

Capped 750 shared by Marcus. Pours translucent gold with a slight, transient white head. Aroma is uber fruity - lots of fruits from under the Southern Cross. Especially the Nelson. Med body or nearly. Flavor is earthy, some sort of bacterial result, and a lot of floral/fruit hop. It’s pretty dry, and it’s rather citrus bitter. The flavor is just WOW!
