Description
Sudwerk Brewing Co. was founded in 1989 by two German descendants determined to share the high-quality, familiar taste of true German lagers. Since then, we have been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of traditional lager making for 30 years; pioneering the craft beer industry along the way.
We choose to brew lagers not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because the end result will serve to refresh and bring the best of our energies and skill, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to drink, with others too.
Our beer making processes are rooted in traditional German brewing methods but blended with modern, West-Coast craft beer practices. We are not afraid of the time consuming and difficult nature of lagers but instead find it to be an exhilarating challenge. We showcase clean, crisp yeast character, powerful flavor-packed hop bombs, and beautiful malt backbones; all on a lager frame. This is not the dull can of lager beer you think you know.

Can purchased at Harry’s Hofbrau. Pours amber and hazy with white head that leaves a collar. Biscuit and orange aroma. Malty biscuit flavor and slight alcohol warmth. Hop flavor is subdued.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours translucent orange tinged gold with a moderate white head. Aroma suggests pineapple and tangerine. Med body or so. Flavor has suggestions of pineapple and tropical fruits, some light stone fruits, and a little citrus. Light malt support. Nice IPA.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours bright gold with a decent white head. Aroma of berries (white), melon and pine. Med plus body. Flavor is clean melon, white grapes and some pine. Not resiny and then it is a bit. Sort of juicy, but dry for me. Very nicely bitter. Very good flavor.

Pour looks more like lemonaide with a fizzy white head. Aroma is lemon and a bit of citrus. Flavor is again a minor lemon and citrus. Finish is dry with some neutral malt left on the tongue. It's very light but the hops make a nice appearance.

Bottle pour from Total Wine & More, Brentwood. It's a clear, golden yellow with decent sparkle, finger-width off-white head with fair retention and trace lacing. Aroma is dank, funky resin, citrus with malt backbone. Taste is mix of citrus, danky pine resin, later pineapple and bread. Mouthfeel is light bodied with thin mouthfeel, significant alcohol warmth, soft carbonation and mostly sweet finish as taste. Overall, reminiscent of West Coast DIPA of old. More flavor than bitterness but not getting passion fruit. No born on date so don't know if this sat a while and hops deteriorated or this is what was intended. Maybe interesting in that this is a lager, but feel like I've been here before. Many times.

16oz can pours an opaque with some ringing off white head. Nose has malt, chocolate, black licorice, some espresso, nutty, some raisin and raisinette. Flavor is better, everything note plays off the other notes, the malt plays off the dark chocolate, the toast plays off the dried fruits, the coffee plays off the licorice. It bounces back and forth. Full bodied, a bit boozy, but otherwise dry finish.

12oz bottle pours a fairly clear amber with a ring of white head. Nose has soggy bread, malt, some caramel, some dried fruits. Flavor is mostly malt, soggy bread, a little rye maybe, some orange. Finishes with just a little adjunct sweetness. Won't change the world, but it's well constructed. 6 4 6 3 11

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours hazy dark gold with a foamy white head. Aroma of sweetish caramel and citrus. Med body. Flavor is citrus, tending towards orange. Caramel support. Not so dry as some IPAs, but far from sweet. Almost juicy. Tropical hints, but citrus variations are the main thing. Quite tasty.
