Description
Sudwerk Brewing Co. was founded in 1989 by two German descendants determined to share the high-quality, familiar taste of true German lagers. Since then, we have been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of traditional lager making for 30 years; pioneering the craft beer industry along the way.

We choose to brew lagers not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because the end result will serve to refresh and bring the best of our energies and skill, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to drink, with others too.

Our beer making processes are rooted in traditional German brewing methods but blended with modern, West-Coast craft beer practices. We are not afraid of the time consuming and difficult nature of lagers but instead find it to be an exhilarating challenge. We showcase clean, crisp yeast character, powerful flavor-packed hop bombs, and beautiful malt backbones; all on a lager frame. This is not the dull can of lager beer you think you know.

Tap at the Dock Store. Pours translucent gold with a white head. Aroma of light malt and citrus/fruit hop. Med body. Flavor is crisp bread and citrus with hints of exotic fruits. Imagination may have gone a bit wild there. Finishes cleanly bitter. Excellently hopped pils - could stand with the best.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Racked 3/12/14. Pours dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is sour, suggesting brett. Med + body. Flavor is brett and dark malt. Arguably some bourbon/vanilla, but it’s fairly acidic/sour. It’s finishing quite sour, quite tart, rather woody. Yet the sour is not mind shattering. Nearly tho. Pretty good stuff, tho a bit challenging.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours pale gold with a white head. Aroma is bready and lightly spicy. Med body or nearly. Flavor is bready, but there’s a lot of spicy/grassy hop. Urquell came suddenly to mind. It’s hoppy and bitter. No wonder it was a hit in 1998.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours bright orange gold with a transient off-white head. Understand the garlic reference two reviews down. There’s a lot of hop. Tropical fruit and citrus work together in strange ways. Med body. Flavor is burning citrus rind with lots of South Pacific fruit suggestions. And I can still think garlic. Not likely true, but ... Malt is rather back of the hop, but it’s malty enough to support this monster. My, but lagers have come a long way.

Tap at The University of Beer in Davis, CA. Pours very dark and ruddy. Aroma of coffee, vanilla and citrus? Med body. Flavor is coffee, vanilla and something tartish. A very, very unusual lager. After a bit the combo suggests grass. Very different and interesting.

Tap at Sudwerk Dock. Pours brassy gold with a white head. At first inhale I thought there was Mosaic. Not so tho. Was a nice aroma. Med body. It’s fruity and earthy. It has a clean and decently bitter finish. Quite tasty.
