Description
Sudwerk Brewing Co. was founded in 1989 by two German descendants determined to share the high-quality, familiar taste of true German lagers. Since then, we have been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of traditional lager making for 30 years; pioneering the craft beer industry along the way.
We choose to brew lagers not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because the end result will serve to refresh and bring the best of our energies and skill, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to drink, with others too.
Our beer making processes are rooted in traditional German brewing methods but blended with modern, West-Coast craft beer practices. We are not afraid of the time consuming and difficult nature of lagers but instead find it to be an exhilarating challenge. We showcase clean, crisp yeast character, powerful flavor-packed hop bombs, and beautiful malt backbones; all on a lager frame. This is not the dull can of lager beer you think you know.

12oz bottle pours crystal clear deep gold with thin near white head. The aroma offers up a nice sweet breadiness, clean fresh malt graininess and gently flowing into thin streams of floral to sort of spicy hops. The taste is both lively with carbonation and hops as well as grounded by pleasing malts, grainy malts and a bready note or two. The hops are modest in strength and seem to be nearly equal in bitterness and flavor hoppiness with notes of spicy and floral hops. Darn nice Helles.

Tap at the Sudwerk Dock Store. Pours amber with a creamy beige head. Definite lavender aroma - but not overdone. Med minus body. Falvor seems fairly lavender with some roast malt and hop bitter. Hop mostly in a floral way, but actually bitter. Might be a touch of citrus hop. Refreshing on a warm evening.

Tap at the "brewpub" as Sudwerk Kolsch (4%). Brewer at The Dock Store indicated this was the first kolsch produced in years, and it proceeded to the "brewpub". So Cologne in the back and and Kolsch up front. Damn complicated arrangement in a way. Pours gold with a white head. Aroma is mildly floral and grassy. Flavor is lightly grassy, very lightly bready, but there’s a lot of flavor for a kolsch. Tasty, refreshing, went well with salad and sausage.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Colonial Wine and Spirits, 3/27/12
Aroma: A rather sweet nose, malts, some apple, bread, and some sort candied sugary sweetness
Appearance: It pours a mostly clear golden color with a small white head and some spotty lacing
Flavor: Taste is heavy sweet, the components are the same as the nose, with a grain/bread finish
Palate: The body is medium, it has a slightly cloying, smooth feel, and just a hint of heat on the finish
Overall Impression: I didn't love this one. They were a little heavy handed with the sweetness for my taste, and there was something fake sugary about the feel that also took away from it for me. Overall, this wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't for me.

Crisp, golden coloured body with a light copper glow with some orange highlights and a nice, one centimetre tall slightly off-white head. Aroma of pale malt, light caster sugars, a touch of citrus and some very light low a.a. german hops. Medium-bodied; Nice complex grassy and herbal flavoured hops up front with a good but pungent malt presence, some alcohol flavours soon afterwards and a touch of citrus. Aftertaste is relatively complex, for the style it shows some good citrus twangs, a touch of earthiness and some subdued alcohol flavours on the end. Overall, a nice helles with some good flavours and a nice crisp finish. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California on 03-February-2012 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 19-February-2012.

Tap at the brewpub. Pours very dark hazy amber with a small white head. Aroma seems citrus/resin. Med body. Nice malt backbone - which is fairly matched by citrus/floral/resin. Bitter finish. Good drink.
Earlier Rating: 1/12/2008 Total Score: 3
Draft at the brewpub. Strong floral? hop aroma. It was served way too cold. Darkish amber color with a fine beige head. Near medium body with very light carbonation. The flavor is a bit watery. Light malt and light floral hop. It has substance, but it has less impact than many IPAs. Based on the ratings, I wonder whether there is indeed more than one recipe.

Tap at the brewpub. Pours dark gold with a creamy white head. Light bready aroma (they serve it really cold). Med body. Flavor is bready with a nice amount of noble hop. Drinks easy; probably good with most food.

More like a bock to me than a marzen. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a red-caramel color with a medium sized foamy tan head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was bock like sour caramel and vegetal malts. The flavor was tangy sour caramel with vegetal malts and a vague fruity presence. Medium length tangy caramel and vegetal finish. Medium body and smooth. Ok.
