Description
Sudwerk Brewing Co. was founded in 1989 by two German descendants determined to share the high-quality, familiar taste of true German lagers. Since then, we have been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of traditional lager making for 30 years; pioneering the craft beer industry along the way.

We choose to brew lagers not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because the end result will serve to refresh and bring the best of our energies and skill, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to drink, with others too.

Our beer making processes are rooted in traditional German brewing methods but blended with modern, West-Coast craft beer practices. We are not afraid of the time consuming and difficult nature of lagers but instead find it to be an exhilarating challenge. We showcase clean, crisp yeast character, powerful flavor-packed hop bombs, and beautiful malt backbones; all on a lager frame. This is not the dull can of lager beer you think you know.

On tap. Pours with a clear orange body with a tan ring. Aroma is toasty and caramel. Taste is diacetyl, caramel and candy corn. Some flavors that remind me of milk. Light bubbles. Not as good as most of Sudwerk’s German style offerings.

On tap. Hazy very pale yellow body with a white head. Aroma of lemon, vanilla, wheat, yeast esters and grass. Taste is mildly lactic, tart, dry, wheat. A Berliner with either a late added lacto or lactic acid accompanied by an obvious but tame hefe strain. This is a tame Berliner, but I feel with in the style. Dry, refreshing with medium bubbles. A bit of leather.

Thanks to bhensonb for this one - clear gold - effervescent pour - soapy ring of lace - medium bitter, medium dry aroma, with quite a bit of herbal and grassy character - faint honey sweet maltiness - some noticeable alcohol detracts a bit from enjoying the aroma - lively mouthfeel, medium-full carbonation - fairly sweet, but strong, spicy noble hops are certainly the star of the show here - the beer dries out somewhat through the middle, but an unwelcome sweetness returns and lingers through the finish, - some alcohol warmth arrives and tries it’s best to work with the spiciness of the hops - a bit too heavy and sweet on the tail end, never delivering the crisp, dry finishes it hints at through the middle - there are some good things here - I feel like, if they made this a regular pils at about 5%, it would have been a phenomenal beer - alas.

Bottle from the Co-op in Davis, CA. Pours gold with a foamy white head. Aroma of noble hop. Medium body with creamy/foamy carbonation. Flavor is a bit bready with a lot of grassy/spicey hop. It’s pleasantly bitter and quite tasty. There’s malt sweet but the bitter seems to stay on top without losing the sugar. Nice.

Bottle. Pours with an opaque, very deep brown body, and a large tan head. Aroma of banana, sharp phenols, roast, flowers, pepper. Taste is lightly tart, wheat, leather. Seems like early signs of a lactic infection. Chocolate, chalky, thin, orange peel. Thin and dry. Something is off.

On tap at Blue Palms. Pours with a clear golden body and a small white head. Aroma is sweet, grainy, caramel, corn and noble hops. Taste is sweet (too sweet if you ask me), grainy, fruit and buttery. Lively bubbles. Non-offensive, but boring and a bit too sweet.
