Pitch black coloured body with a two centimetre tall deep brown head and literally no light at all passing through the body - 100% opaque. Aroma of roasted malt, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, hops, vanilla, molasses and a bit of raisins too - very nice and pungent, but still relatively subdued. Full-bodied; Rich roasted malt flavours with hints of cascade hops, alcohol, oak, soy sauce, molasses and even some whiskey at the end. Aftertaste shows a more rounded flavour of chocolate and figs with a lot of bitterness from hops, oak and roasted malts, but only a light alcohol burn hits on the palate and this time from a very nice whiskey flavour. Overall, a well balanced imperial stout that is still showing some hop notes and leads with a complexity that hits hard and doesn’t overburden with alcohol - nice indeed and well worth bringing back and keeping on hand for a year to mellow out some of the flavours. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland, Oregon on 27-September-2013 for US$6,23 sampled at home in Washington on 05-October-2014, just over a year after purchasing this one. On tap. Pours a dark brown with light head. Aromas of fresh coffee grounds and roasted barley, with some cooked vegetable notes. Flavors are similar are with emphasis on chewy fresh ground coffee. Interesting.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours black with an amber tinge and a small beige head. Aroma reveals notes of coffee grinds and faint lactic sugar. Flavour blends these two elements beautifully, with espresso and lactose. Just sweet enough to balance the coffee roast. Excellent stout.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Black color with beige compact head. Strong aroma and flavor of coffee, a bit aromatic, a bit acidic; not my kind of coffee (to me it has traces of old coffee grounds), but it has depth; moderate residual sweetness, contributes to a good body structure; strong bitterness with hop resins.
A different kind of Black IPA.

Bottle from Haggen’s Grocery, Woodenville
Mild roasted malt aroma, more pronounced roasted malt flavor, cardboard, milk or lactose, and too much liquorice; moderate residual sweetness.
It plays too much with the liquorice and oxidization, hence it’s a bit heavy for me.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan / light brown head. Nose brings out roasted barley, chocolate, and some muffled roast notes. Flavour is... what the hell... very astringent with loads of nasty earthy off-notes, roast, and very bitter cocoa. There is some licorice in there too. Nasty stuff - undrinkable to me. I wonder if there's something wrong with the bottle, as the high rating seems questionable to me. Not a good one.

Bottle from Whole Foods
Hazy blond color with medium sized head. Nice grassy hop aroma with light minty and basil touch. Dry mouthfeel; nice crispy malts, but it could be better, good bitterness level, but also the hop character could be better.
Interesting.

22 oz. bottle, pours a clear pale golden blonde with a small white head. Aroma is bizarre, with sweet cereal malts, some bizarre fruits, and floral hops -- weird nose. Flavour is dry and floral, with dry biscuity malt, floral hops, and some sweet cereal. Quite dry on the mouthfeel. Not very interesting stuff, but drinkable enough. Meh.

Bottle shared on the 76 year old drinking shelf thanks to James F, IOW Jolly Day, 24/08/14. Clear golden amber with a well appointed light beige covering. Nose is pine, caramel malt, bitter hops, orange pith, tangerine, sprucey wood. Taste comprises pine, bitter orange, straw, grapefruit, nice piney streak. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness in the close. Decent enough IPA.

Everything about this beer says average, however I found it extremely enjoyable. Very easy to drink, although on the whole its not memorable . Delicious but unexciting .
