Draught keg at the brewpub. Very dark brown and mostly opaque with an uneven film of khaki head. Smells of molasses, liquorice, cocoa powder. Taste is sweet with a little bit of umami. Treacle, sesame seed. Wow. Soft finish mellowing the intense flavours. Medium body with soft to medium carbonation. Amazing.

Gorgeous taproom to the north of the centre. I've always like UnBarred beers and it is a treat to try them here. There are 16 taps in all (14 keg and two cask), mostly UnBarred but a few guests such as Vault City and a couple ciders. It's small indoors but there's lots of outdoor seating (therefore a great choice on a sunny day). Cheap takeaway cans with £1.50 drink in surcharge. Deservedly popular.

I've come across a few Laine pubs in London and the never seem up to much. So I thought I'd give North Laine, the brewpub in Brighton, the d college try to see what I was missing. The answer is: not a lot, but little. Here they had 10 Laine beers on draught including what looked like one-offs and specials. All were sessionable (nothing over 5%) and nothing too crazy or innovative style-wise. The brewpub itself is a bit dingy, think student bar BoHo. Glass not allowed outside which I get but also don't take as a particularly welcoming sign. Can be missed but if you do stop in you might find something.

Draught keg at Vine Street Tap and Bottle. Pinkish orange and mostly clear with an uneven pinkish white head. Smells like a posh orange soda. The orange and lemon/lime character, along with a touch of pink grapefruit, seem to be coming through very well. Taste is just too sweet, and I like sweet beer. Yes it is a radler but my goodness. Short finish and light body with pretty heavy carbonation. It is a good summer drink with nice orange flavour, but yes quite sweet as I may have mentioned!

Msn this place is tiny. I was trying to work out how many it would seat, maybe 25 with the couple of tables outside. Another bar that you would find without looking for it. The tap list is also small - four beers - plus a few interesting bottles (including some 750ml sours for over £20). The tap list has Beak x2, Vault City, and Weekend Project. I opted for the Vault City radler which was fine. Prices maybe a wee bit high. Still very much worth a look in.

Keg draught at BrewDog Brighton. Dark gold and cloudy with a thin uneven white head. Aroma is horse blanket funk, light musty citrus. Tastes really funky but not outright sour. Very overripe citrus. More sourness appears closer to the finish. Stings a little in the back if the throat. Medium body with almost no carbonation. A great experience but perhaps a beer to be respected rather than loved?

Pretty good BrewDog as BrewDog goes these days. It's almost empty on an early Frisay afternoon whereas other venues are filling up. It's pretty large, with 27 beers on tap (18 BD, 9 guests). I always try to pop into a BrewDog as they often have something interesting on, and today I got a Jester King saison so that's pretty good. Otherwise a bit soulless although I can't fault it. Prices a tad bit more than they should be.

Another outstanding beer pub in Brighton (I am not surprised but I am having trouble keeping up). It's laid back, a little BoHo with shabby wooden furniture. A smallish room with a bar on one side. There are four cask and a row of 12 keg, plug various keg choices (German and English craft lagers) dotted on the bar. Some of them toy will have had before but there will be plenty of ticks to be tried, not least the beers from their own brewery (mostly in cask but a couple in keg here). Prices are reasonable for Brighton. Definitely would recommend.

Keg draught at Brighton Bierhaus. Mid- to dark chocolate brown, translucent with a tight beige head. Light aroma of chocolate, a little bit of hazelnut, touch of oak. The taste is mostly sweet with some bitterness, with flavours of liquorice and milk chocolate. Long finish is fairly bitter. Soft body with medium carbonation. Really good but a trifle timid.
