On tap at Toms Tap, Crewe. Pours almost black with a sizable tan head and good lacing. There’s a really strong aroma of coffee but there’s roast malts and cocoa in there as well. In the mouth it is somewhere between sweet and bitter – a foot in both camps. Smooth and creamy with flavour of roasted malts and coffee grounds plus traces of honey and biscuits. This is quite nice – though not as much coffee in the flavour as I was expecting.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a dark chestnut with a small foamy tan head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly malts with some hints of dark berries. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy but with a little underlying bitterness. Malts and berry fruits are the main flavours with traces of biscuits, honey and caramel coming later leading to a slightly dry finish. This is reasonable – if somewhat bland.

On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe (at 5.6%). Pours a very dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Coffee is very much the strongest constituent in the aroma, but there’s also traces of cocoa and malts. In the mouth it is pretty sweet but with a little underlying sharpness too. Coffee again to the fore in the aroma, alongside roast malts, caramel, nuts and traces of dark fruits, This is decent.

Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small foamy tan head and good lacing. There’s an enticing aroma of chocolate, cake, dried fruit and malts. In the mouth it is sweet and smooth with plenty of depth to it. Flavour starts out as malts, traditional hops, liquorice and chocolate. But there’s an ever-changing selection of traces coming through – vanilla, treacle, cocoa, cake and spices. All leading to a fruity and slightly dry finish. This is rather nice.

This is basically a stronger version of Cwtch and my review of that beer still applies. Anyway, cask at Pickled Pig, Stafford. Pours reddish-brown with a medium sized frothy cream head and good lacing. There’s malts and humbugs in the aroma plus a hint of almonds. In the mouth it has a layer of sweetness on top of a bitter base. Flavours of grains, rye, traditional hops, caramel and toffee. A little lemon sharpness comes through later leading to a bitter tangy finish. This is decent.
