Can from co-op Inverurie. It pours clear orange - blonde with a lasting fluffy white head. The aroma is toasty grains, cereal, bread, earthy, nuttiness, wood, some tangy orange marmalade and some leafy, herbal notes. The taste is firmly dry, pleasingly bitter, woody, earthy, nutty, toasty grains, ryvita, touch green, herbal, grassy, spicy, pithy orange and some bready malts with a drying, spicy finish. Average body and moderate carbonation. I rather like this. Plenty of flavour to it and enjoyable to drink.

The aroma is bitter - sweet, dark roasted malt, charred pine, green , weedy, herbal, dank, some ripe tropical fruits, mango, ripe apricot, red cola and cola cubes. The taste is initially smooth, dark roasted malt, toasted pine, burnt toast, green, weedy, herbal, liquorice allsorts, touch of tropical fruits / zesty citrus and some coffee grounds. Pretty sure OG Zeitgeist was the first ever beer I rated... This boozer Berlin version was procured via Brewdog online. It pours hazy deep reddish - brown with a sturdy beige head. The aroma is rather fruity, dark fruits, dried fruits and berries, touch of spice, toasted fruit cake, toasty malts, cola cubes and splash of Dr Pepper. The taste is initially smooth, dry, roasty, toasty malts, some bitterness, slightly charred, umami, rather fruity, ripe red berry, also blueberry, raisin, sultana, coffee grounds some umami, cacao nibs and some toasty spice with a dry, deeply roasted malt. Medium body and average carbonation. Flavourful and well balanced. Nice one.

Can from Westhill Service Station. It pours darkest brown to black with a dissipating beige head. The aroma is rich roasted malts, bitter - sweet chocolate, vanilla, coffee grounds, nuttiness and snickers. The taste is smooth, bitter - sweet, dark roasted malts, chewy, toothy, chocolate, cacao nibs, vanilla and dull coffee notes with a smooth, roasty, chocolate finish. Fairly light for a stout, but not thin. Decent supportive carbonation. Thought this might be a bit sweet, but it wasn't nice butter - sweet balance and very drinkable.

Can from Lorna. It pours darkest brown with a khaki head. The aroma is rich and robust, dark roasted malt, toasty warming spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, plump dried fruits, booze soaked raisins and definite Eccles cake vibes. The taste is quite crisp and dry upfront, dark roasted malt, earthy, toothy, light acidity, washed coffee, dried fruits, raisin in particular, fruit cake, touch of toasty sugars, festive spice and cacao nibs with a drying, toasty finale. Average body and fine, prickly carbonation. Captures the character of the infamous St John's Eccles cake. Interesting and quaffable.

750ml bottle from Raynville Superstore. It pours slightly hazy orangey - blonde with a small, but lasting white cap. The aroma is quite bright, zingy orange citrus, stone fruits, apricot, mango, splash of Irn Bru, touch woody, sappy pine, some minerality, clay, damp hay, white grape and gooseberry. The taste is crisp, firmly dry, actually a touch of bitterness, woody, crisp, puckering, spritzy sherbet, sour candy,v stone fruits, dried apricot, tangy orange citrus, tangelo, zippy acidity which quickly dissipates, splash of white wine, slightly musty, damp funk and finishing on minerality and dry oak. Medium body and fine to average carbonation. I really like this. Lovely depth and the dry hopping brings a different dimension not the aroma.

Bottle from Raynville Superstore. It pours jet black with a sturdy brown head. The aroma is rich, super dark roasted malt, charred pine, umami, sticky liquorice, allsorts toasted sesame seeds, cacao, pipe tobacco, some dark and dried fruits. The taste is firmly dry, bitter, chewy, toothy, rather savoury, plenty of umami, molasses, big hit of liquorice, burnt toast, dark chocolate, cacao nimbs, burnt toast, dried fruits, fruit cake, burnt pine and a lick of booze with a dark roasted finish. Fulsome body and moderate carbonation. Rich and robust. Perhaps a touch too savoury for it to compete against some of the other editions of this, but great nonetheless.
