Heather Infused Dark Ale. Rich, dark beer inspired by and infused with smoked heather from the stunning Clwydian Range local to the brewery.

Moel Famau is named after the largest hill in the Clwydian Range. Head Brewer Phill created a range of beers that showcased local ingredients, he chose heather from Moel Famau for this delicious porter. Phill burns the heather and infuses the smoke into the barley malt leaving a subtle note of heather within the rich chocolate and coffee aromas.

500ml bottle bought from the brewery and drunk at home. The beer is dark brown, only slightly translucent, with a very thin ring of beige head. Aroma gives chocolate, light grassy and lavender notes, paper, a little bit of vinegar and possibly some sweet spice. Interesting. Sweet taste with the chocolate prominent and some gentle grassy flavour. Some bitterness in the finish. Lavender and maybe some coriander join the chocolate in the aftertaste. Odd, certainly not what I was expecting, but a good beer.

Bottle from Stori. Appearance - dark brown to black. Attractive fawn head. Nose - mainly chocolate, something sweet and syrupy, presumably from the heather. Taste - milk chocolate, some caramel. Cakey. Palate - creamy and medium bodied. Elegant, and tapered finish. Overall - very nice.

Cask @ Cottage Loaf, Llandudno. Clear but very dark brown with a thin off-white head. Has a good smoothness to it with dark malts providing plenty of taste, and a decent aroma.

5th Oct 2015; Bottle share at Shrewsbury with Gene as guest. Dark brown bodied beer with a tan coloured head. Malt base with a herbal/medicine aroma and taste, think Underberg (if you know it). Not my thing, scored objectively..

330ml bottle @ Shrewsbury Beer Share, Travlr edition, Oct 15, courtesy of myself, bought in Stori Beer & Wine, Bala. Pours dark brown. Supposed to be heather infused but I detected very little. For a brown ale though, it’s decent enough.
