Otter Bright was one of the original really pale beers. ‘Bright’ made her debut in the summer of ’96 but has since earned a regular place in our full time line up. Originally designed to tempt lager drinkers from the dark-side, now a well respected trendsetter in the UK.

So what can you expect when you line up your first pint of Otter Bright. Its pale golden colour enhances the great condition of the beer. The strong, citrus fruit aroma follows through into a refreshingly fruity, tasty beer. A subtle bitterness at the end balances the sweeter notes.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - pale golden with a proportionate head. Nose - lemon pith and floral notes. Taste - more intense lemon. Maybe some herbs. Palate - light bodied but with quite a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - yeah golden ale alright and decent.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW, London. Pours clear yellow with a frothy, white foam head. Doughy malt nose with hints of lemon and straw. Light to medium sweet flavor with more doughy, pale malts, mild lemon rind, some white bread, low bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Pretty good condition. Moderately sweet finish with more shite bread, biscuits, faint citrusy hops. Basic but decent.

Bottle from ASDA, Bideford. Tasty mild fruits in a light textured bitter that keeps a head for a while. Fruit aroma too and quite hoppy.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before end of May 2010, drank mid Dec 2009. Poured into my ’Old Speckled Hen’ pint vase shaped glass. Made with ’lager malt’ and asked to be served cool, it was. Looks every inch a lager more than a UK bitter. Deep pure white head (which produced some impressive lacing) sat on top of an almost bright golden body. Plenty of carbonisation, huge amounts of bubbles rising through the beer from start to finish. Slight yeast aroma in the air, hay and grass too, not very British. The taste is a mix between a lager and a UK bitter, not too sure I like it. Refreshing it is, but the dryness in the aftertaste takes away the enjoyment for me. A true hybrid, Fuggles hops are used, couldn’t detect them apart from the aforementioned dryness. The beer lacks body in a big way, easy to drink but needs more substance. Didn’t float my boat, but it is a pleasant enough drink I suppose. Perhaps I should have tried it in warmer weather, it is -1 outside at the moment and getting colder.

Cask at The Turks Head in Penzance. Pours hazy light gold with a creamy white head. Light floral/citrus aroma. Flavor is light floral and fruit over very light malt. Tending towards kolsch?

50cl bottle bought in Hartney Whitney. Hazy straw with a white head that fades to a scummy appearance; citrus aroma with some musty grains; sweet grainy body with some citrus and honey; dry finish. Completely underwhelming.
