Some may call this a malty double IPA, some a hoppy barley wine. We prefer that it not be classified. We think of it, simply, as our strong winter ale. Intense hop aromatics and flavor (think pine, candied orange) blended with just enough malt sweetness to balance out the palate.

Tasting at Bruce’s Pad. Thanks to Leighton. Lightly hazy amber beer, good pale cream coloured head. Light airy palate, crispy. Lightly bitter brett. Modest dried fruits. More bretty bitterness. Okay but could do without the brett.

Bottle shared in London - picked up in the US. Pours hazy gold with a frothy, white head. The aroma holds a bit of orange, some tangerine, mango, some bready malts. Medium sweet flavor with more peach, some aged pine, ripe citrus fruits. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Light resinous hops to finish, some pine, sugary bread, citrus rind, ripe orange. Solid.

Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours cloudy orange-amber with a small white head. The nose is earthy, toast, alcohol, orange squash, acid, earth, acetic, vanilla and wood. The taste is bitter-sweet, earth, dirt, orange squash, tangerine, candy, candied peel, sugar, candy, pine, varnish and alcohol with a dry, somewhat, citric finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Pretty alright.

12/20/13 bottle drunk on 1/15/14
Cherry-amber body shows a high clarity, leaving the sediment behind. White head is mostly receding.
Didn’t read anything about this beer before trying it, which was pretty fun, no expecations. Double IPA in the nose. Bold, resinous, juicy hops provide white grapefruit, peaches, cherries and tons of pine. I do like the cherry/peach combo, obviously a liberal use of very fresh hops at the end. Malt is full of caramel, but seems nicely attenuated, nothing sugary or syrupy/cloying here. Medium to medium-high strength of aroma. Some alcohol/ester burn, ever so slight.
Full on hop bomb flavor. Very bitter citrus, with tons of dry, bready malt and a very supple body thanks to an appropriate amount of maltiness and a lighter carbonation. Not boozy, which is great, but an obnoxious amount of bitterness. It certainly provides an enjoyable hop flavor as well, but it’s a bit too brash without as much complexity as I’d hope for. The cherry/grapefruit flavor is nice, but let’s see some more tropical fruit and some more depth of malt.

Bottle. Pours hazy reddish amber with a medium creamy beige head that sticks around and laces very nicely. Aroma is a pleasing blend of pine, grapefruit, citrus, just a touch of grass and caramel to keep it honest, along with some passionfruit. Flavor is light plus sweet and medium bitter, citrus pine caramel flavors all melding together. Finish is fairly bitter, but just short of harsh. Full body and creamy mouthfeel. ABV very well hidden, perhaps a bit of burn in the far finish to give it away. Yum!

Label on bottle stamped bottled on 11-14-13. With batch 02 after the code. Lots of fluffy, foamy head that laced for the entire glass. Really great hop bouquet, Pine, citrus and a grassy note permeates from the glass. Must have dry hopped this with bucket loads of hops! Toasted grain and toffee malts provide a nice base for the assertive hop blast that is used in here. Bready malts give it that nice chewy medium body followed by citrus orange hops upfront then transitioning into a grassy/ resinous pine hop that lingers for a good time after the swallow. Texture is mildly sticky. This brew drinks fantastic for the alcohol level. Can this really be 9.1?!! If you can get a fresh bottle, do so!
