Bottle at Deanso’s last THT. Hazy light yellow with good sized white head. Massive smoked malts but also strong ash and burnt wood. Light sweet malts and some sausage and ham. Massive campfire basically. Some sweetness. Medium bodied. Way too smoked for me.

Bottle from Beer Revolution courtesy of Isobel (cheers Isobel!), Hay on Wye, Powys consumed at Isobels, Eardisley, Herefordshire Sunday 25th, Christmas Day, December 2016 shared with Baz. Pours light amber in colour with a white head. Baz gets smokey bacon on the nose I get the classic aroma from a smoked, namely smoked sausage. It’s a smokey beer and yet it is not just about that, it’s also a little fruity and you can pick out the hops (no surprise from Weird Beard there then aye?) its a good, solid Rauchbier. Weird Beard’s interpretation of the famed Bamberg Rauchbier style. Medium sized, lightly lacing, off-white, moussy head, warm and clear amberish orange gold colour with pretty lively sparkling here and there, turning fully hazy with deposit. Aroma is a lot of fun (as is the text on the label, by the way): you are punched in the face with roasted chicken, barbecue sausages, a very strong - and delicious - suggestion of smoked bacon, paprika and other chicken spices, all overpowering a subtle sweet barley odour, bit biscuity, and floral hops. The taste is less smoky than expected, with a gentle malt fruitiness, a bit caramelly and nutty, soft carbonation, lean and fairly thin mouthfeel, minerally accents, and then, in the finish, indeed retronasal smokiness, but not nearly as strong as in e.g. Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, the classic by which this is likely inspired. Apart from the gentle smoked flavour, there are lingering biscuity malt sweetness and earthy, spicy hop bitterness in the finish, the latter lasting quite long. A bit of a one-trick pony I’m afraid, the flavour disappoints a bit in comparison with the aroma, but the aroma gave me so much pleasure that I can easily forgive this. Still, if it comes to this style, I would recommend Aecht Schlenkerla over this.

Cask at Pigs Ear 2014 - London. Pours clear, bright gold with a creamy white head. Great aroma, lots of dry smoke, biscuits, pale bread. Light to medium sweet flavor with robust but balanced smoked malts, light bitter straw, some tangerine. Light bodied with fine carbonation; great condition. Very well balanced on the finish, further dry smoke, hints of honey ham, more biscuits. Excellent. (December 2014, score: 3.9)

Bottle at home in London - picked up at Kris Wines. Pours crystal clear gold, highly effervescent, with a frothy white head. Rich and clean smoked malt aroma, lots of ham, some toasted grains. Medium sweet flavor with robust honey-smoked ham, pale bread, light caramel, soft hay, orange. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Finishes fairly sweet with more strong ham, smoke, honey, lightly toasted pale malts and mellow caramel. Outstanding. Having had this both on cask and in bottle, I’m pretty damn impressed by this one. Probably the best UK-made rauchbier I’ve encountered. (April 2015, score: 4.0)

330ml bottle from BeerMerchants.com. Pours hazy amber with medium head. Surprisingly smoky aroma with a big vibrant Rauchbier hit on first sip. Perhaps not as dark-tasting as Schlenkerla but an enjoyable, commendable effort.
