This hearty red-brown ale has a slight smokey aroma of sweet caramel and lightly toasted malt. The flavor is malty, yet very smooth, with a delicate hop finish and a creamy head.

9/7/2009 Picked this up on a recent trip to NY. Pours a clear reddish brown with a good sized bubbly beige head. Smells of smoke and bacon initially. Huge smoky aroma dominates my nostrils. Faint dark fruits and maybe some walnuts hide deep in the bowels of my glass. Taste is sweet with caramel, molasses, and tobacco flavors that are scissored by some smoke to finish with a lingering cured meat/alcohol finish. Definitely a sipper here. Carbonation is medium to high, a bit prickly on the tongue affecting the creaminess of the mouthfeel a little bit. Big body. This is a nice sipper. Its a bit more smokey than I normally like, but what the hell it’s pretty good.

Pint bottle, $2 @ Ray’s, Wauwautosa. Pours a nice brown malty body with busy bubbles and a large head. Smoky malt smell that can’t help but carry phenol, bacon and Edam cheese rind. Taste has plenty of Bamberg smoke to it, much more than any Scotch character. Still, the malt is nice and thick, but I start to get overwhelmed by Band-Aid taste. Gets a little hard to finish as a result. May be much better fresh on tap.

16 fl oz bottle purchased at Gomers in Lenexa, Kansas. Pour is hazy, a bit murky ruby cordovan with pretty settling that builds up a lasting one inch tan head. Very little lacing. Aroma of sweet grassy caramel malt and some mildly smoked peat. Behind that is more straw, and a nice soft cherry fruit. Nice inviting nose. Taste is the fruit sweetness first, followed by grassy caramel toasted malt and finishes with the smoky peat. The smoke is more pronounced than the nose, but is nicely ingrated with the sweetness. Palate is medium to full, lowish carbonation and a mineral grainy finish. The sweetness edges on cloying towards the very back, and becomes more honey than caramel cherry. I enjoyed this one quite a bit, nice beer.

Bottle. Pours with a hazed toffee colored body and a khaki white, creamy, largish head. Aroma of raisin, peat, butterscotch, vanilla, charred wood, caramel, and copper. Taste is strong in peat, smoke, earthy tones, beef jerky, liquid smoke and metal with a touch of dark fruits and caramel. Light carbonation and full mouthfeel. A bit astringent on the finish with the smokey peat.

16oz bottle. Dark, murky but still a little transparent, brown. Smooth, simple and malty. Not unlike a lot of authentic Scottish Ales. Delicate hop balance, but overall it’s sweet and quite drinkable. Impressive medium bodied mouthfeel for a beer of it’s strength. Quite nice, I’d like to try it on draft.

Far superior to the bourbonized style. Fairly not brown but nearly clear. Just as the description says. Light smoke, earth, lightly roasted malt, maybe a little peat. Medium palate, fairly dry overall.

Reddish-brown colour. Smokey, lightly peaty nose with lots of caramel. Lots of smoke, a fair bit of caramel. Some brown sugar notes. The body is fairly light for style, and the overall presentation is somewhat simple.

Rich plummy aroma. Hazy brown color with a beige/tan head that flattened very quickly. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavors are caramel, dark fruit, smoke, and more. It’s very rich and flavorful. Though heat is not noticeable, my body says there’s alcohol here. The finish is something pruney with smoke and light bitter. Quite surprising and palatable.
