My first Eel River beer, a brewery I frankly never heard of before I stumbled upon this bottle. Very thick and frothy, heavily cobweb-lacing, rocky, beaten egg-like, spongy head over a warm orange blonde beer with a feather light haze throughout, as a result of a diffuse suspension of yeast bits, becoming cloudy orange with sediment. Aroma breathes a West Coast IPA character but in a somewhat restrained way, with impressions of orange peel, softly pine-scented air freshener (Chinook!), biscuit, lemon zest, toasted onion (Simcoe!), dried mango, spruce resin, raspberry, some lychee, old cake, hints of hemp, sweet-clover, vanilla sugar, green banana and guave. Crisp, sweetish onset of apricot, dried mango and mandarin with redcurrant sourishness underneath, minerally accents but medium in carbonation, supple mouthfeel with lightly caramelly malt sweetness, biscuity accents and a bittering toasted edge in the end, matching well with a hoppy finish providing a grapefruity, mildly resinous, spicy bitterness along with retronasal floral, citrus peel- and very softly pine-like aromas but at the same time allowing most of the juicy, caramelly malt sweetness to creep through, all going down in a pleasantly aromatic, bittersweet, citrusy way; I also get a hint of warming alcohol, which I think shouldn’t be the case in a beer of less than 7% ABV. Decent IPA, but quite stereotypical and not adding much to an already vast array of West Coast IPAs, bit cliché and unnoticeable, but technically correct and pleasant enough, with an agreeable balance of biscuity malt sweetness and resinous hop bitterness. I guess this is more ’luscious’ when young (and / or from tap), but in this form, I sure enjoyed it and would revisit if given the chance.

Draft at Delirium Hoppy Loft. Pours cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma of grassy hops, weeds, light fruits, light citrus and caramel malt. Flavour is light to light moderate sweet and moderate to heavy bitter. Medium bodied with a resinous hop palate coating mouthfeel and light but slightly annoying carbonation that gives a weird feeling in the finish.
