The style of our summer ale is traditionally European, similar to a German kolsch: full bodied with a spicy hop tang and a rich, crystal clear golden color. Alcohol content is approximately 6% by volume.
Ingredients: Two row English malt (clarity, wheat and caramalt); Magnum, Tettnang and Saaz hops.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Clear golden with a medium white head. Overripe fruits aroma with pear, prickly pear and banana. Sweetish flavor with malt, somewhat bready, fruits, light yeasty hints, and a finish with some spicy hops bitterness. Medium-bodied. OK.

one of my favorite brewers, but this wasnt a hit, this was a little bit of a miss for me. the kolsch style is not my favorite anyway, but when its advertized or marketed as a "summer ale" is when i get confused, I dont know how anyone would like this in the summer, it would leave my mouth dry like sand, and the malt flavor gets on my nerves after awhile, oh well, ill stick to the pacifico.

Bottle. Pours aclear, honey-gold. Very light, white head. Some caramel malt on the nose, along with some fruitiness. Flavor is reasonably sweet, some nice caramel notes, some bready sweetness. Finishes with some pleasant bittness, lightly earthy. Light bodied with moderate carbonation. A pretty good beer; a bit more complex than your average summer ale.

Crystal amber coloured body with a thin off-white head and an orange/ruby tint. Aroma of metal, lemon, malt and a bit of funkyness. Medium to Light-bodied; Very mild maltiness with a super small amount of hops and sugar, but a lot of metal and bitter flavours. Aftertaste is sweet and mild - nothing harsh at all. Overall, not my favourite summer beer - it could be a lot better, but its still good to try during the season. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 02-June-2005 at Jon(R888710)’s.

12 ounce bottle from the Wine Cellar (I think that’s the name) in Staunton, VA. Pours a clear golden color with a medium head. Average head retention and lacing. Aroma is toasted malts with fruity citrus notes. Taste is bitter hops, toasted malts and citrus. Medium bodied.

12 oz bottle courtesy of eaglefan538. Pour is slightly hazed copper golden with a 1 1/2 inch white head that is pretty and lasting. Some lacing. Aroma of sharp maltiness, tangerine fruit and some corniness. Taste is the corny maltiness, some slight sharp sweet fruit - cherries and some cardboard. Also a nice citrus tang in there as well. The finish is long and very much wet cardboard. The palate is light medium, crisp with some nice carbonation. Overall, this one was likely past its prime - would love to try again fresher. Thanks for sending this my way, Brian.

Orangey-amber colour. Decent nose has caramel, diacetyl. Lightly fruity palate, a little overwhelming on the diacetyl. Not so summery in that respect. And I’ve never had a butterbomb kolsch before.

This bottle courtesy of John jjpm74, thanks and appreciation go his way! Shorter brown 12 oz bottle with a twist off cap. At first I thought the aroma was rather dishwatery but it cleared immediately to a unique sweetish candy aroma typical of many strong ales. I’m almost afraid to taste it for fear of an alky impact. This brew is a little darker than the typical pale yellow american lager, nearly the color of yuengling’s traditional, almost but not quite orange. Tho the aroma is strong, the taste of this is laid back for a 6% brew. The alky does not hit immediately but begins to build with each taste on the sides of the tongue. No head on this beer just a thin girdle around the inside of the glass. For 6%, this stuff is friendly and well behaved, the alky content is tasted but it’s certainly not in yer face. Medium low carbonation. This brew is more enjoyable than other kolsch I’ve had such as Flying Dog Tire Bite Golden Ale, Schell Zommerfest and Rock Bottom Hoochie Koochie Kolsch. The fruit background hints in this brew make the bitterness much more acceptable. This stuff is on par with the best kolsch I’ve tasted, John Havard’s Monroeville Kolsch. Not one to enjoy bitterness, real kolsch does not appeal to me but this one is probably one of the more palatable. Finish is a medium bit of malty bitterness that hangs for a few moments after the last swig. It is then that you feel some alky on the palate.
