Black, small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, smoked meat, tar, tobacco. Taste is sweet but balanced, with a wonderful spicy chilli afterburner.

Tap @ Cardinal. Black body under a small, beige head. Aroma has malt, caramel and green pepper. Taste is sweet, dark malt, fruity, chocolate and chili. Quite hot actually. Fine body with long lasting, hot chili aftertaste. Quite nice for a few sips, but the chili feels a bit dominating after a while.

(Draught at Jopenkerk, Haarlem, 10 Aug 2023) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of espresso, dark chocolate, soy sauce and liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with sweet espresso, liquorice, soy sauce, and a finish with a balanced coffee bitterness and a certain chilli heat. Full body, quite sweet. Rich and tasty imperial stout, with a little chilli bite. Very nice.

On tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. Black colour, tan head. Chili and roast malts in aroma and flavour, only a hint of vanilla. A distinct chili burn, nice and warming throatfeel.

Mi2 juleavslutning, Cardinal des-23: nesten helt svart med fint beige skum som varer. Chilialarm! Etterfulgt av litt vanilje, mørke dessertchokolader og bjørnebærdrops. And with a distinct, lingering afterburn.

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition! Bottle. Almost black. Malt, roast and a hint of red pepper in the aroma. Malty sweetish, roasty flavor, well dosed and integrated pepper. A soft burn in the mouth. Not unpleasant. Well done. Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency

330 bottle. Pours black with moderate tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, berries and alchohol. Flavors of rich dark chocolate, pepperoni and oily roasted malts. But the backburn is crazy.

Fles gedeelt met LiekevdV. Het is een donkerbruin bier. Het heeft een peperige geur en pittige smaak. Wat een rommel

One of Jopen’s limited edition brews, bottle from the Albert Heijn in Haarlem (next to the Jopenkerk) shared by Craftmember, thanks! A vanilla- and chili-flavoured stout, curious for this one. Moussy, slowly receding, pale yellowish beige head on a hazy dark chocolate brown beer with burgundy hue, blackish in general looks but still largely translucent. Aroma of strong and lively vanilla beans, milk chocolate, brown toast, ‘dame blanche’, brownies, dried chili peppers in the background, molten caramel, black pepper, kahlua, dates. Sweet onset, candied dates and figs with a light sourish edge, medium carbonated, smooth and full, bit oily mouthfeel; very caramelly and ‘deeply’ chocolatey maltiness adorned with early ‘stings’ of chili heat, steadily flowing towards a surprising finish: lots of retronasal, very elegant vanilla mingled with lingering chocolatey sweetness from the malts, but ‘deafened’ by a sudden, strong kick of full-fledged chili heat from the Madame Jeanette, one of the sharpest peppers on the commercial market. This chili burn dominates the end of the beer but primarily the end, constructing a finish altogether different from what I am used to in imperial stouts – even those made with chili peppers. The basic beer is well-made and flawless with enough body to sustain this chili burn, but that burn will not be suitable for anyone; critics can argue that this is a bit over the top and should learn from American strong chili stouts (with Cigar City’s Hunahpu’s as the most iconic example, probably) in restraining it and making it more aligned with the vanilla, maltiness and other flavours, but I for one absolutely adore capsaicin and spicy food so for me this was a real treat, and likely the most interesting Jopen I had to date. I want more of this!

Draft. A dark brown beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, alcohol, and coffee. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, roasted malt, chili, and spices, leading to a dry finsih.
