Owing to Hurricane Irene, Tonya was stranded at the airport and unable to fly over to brew for us. Despite this, Tonya was able to assist in brewing her beer from the other side of the world. This dark ale has a citrus-pine-like aroma, tempered by sweet malts and hints of roastiness. There’s a balance between hoppy bitterness and roasted chocolate, in the flavour, and a finish which is long and brimming with hops.

Has a good balance and blend of hops as well as roasted flavours in the taste.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Clear dark brown beer. Residual off white head. Light semi dry palate. Mild carbonation. Light piney hops - very mild. Similarly mild dark fruits and a light touch of dark malt. Okay but was hoping for a lot more than this.

[Cask at the Monk’s Retreat, Reading] Brown with a moderate beige head and a slight fizz. Nice frothy mouthfeel and a good fresh hoppy smell. Taste of chocolate and roasted malt at first before the hops kick in, with a strong and lasting (and repeating on you later) green leaf and pine flavour. It seemed unbalanced to me – the hops did not go with the malt, and despite being full of flavour it didn’t do it for me.

Cask at Northwood Hills Wetherspoons. A dark brown/ruby coloured pour with a small beige head on top. Fruity, malty aroma. Tastes malty, roasty, chocolate, dark fruit, bitter and some sweetness. I quite liked this.

Cask @ Camperdown Place, JDW. Spoons Real Ale Festival autumn 2011. Dark copper colour, large off-white head. Nose is light toasted malts, pine, bit of wood. Flavour is slight toasted malts, pine and a decent hop bitterness. Decent malty backbone, light chocolate. Fairly bitter and dry finish. Well balanced, lots of flavour and easy drinkable.

Cask handpull at Westgate Spoons Canterbury. Mahogany deep clear with lasting beige thin head. It’s a decent dark fruity strong bitter. Fruit is a tad muddled. Some toast. Feels like it is trying to do too many things at same time. Lacks harmony. Needs a lesson in zen.

Deep chocolate brown colour. Aroma has plenty of plummy fruitiness and malts. Intense maltiness leads to a more bitter, roasted finish. Very smooth and silky.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Copper in colour with a thin cream head. Smooth and sweet with a nutty malt flavour and an earthy finish.
