Cask special for the Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival October 2013.

Jamie Floyd has travelled to Caledonian Brewery, in Edinburgh, to brew a special version of one of his brewery’s beers, just for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. This straw-coloured beer has a light, crisp malt aroma, with a fruity hop presence of apricot and mango, leading to a creamy mouthfeel with toasted flavours and a refreshing, hoppy, creamy finish.

Hops used: Crystal, Liberty, Simcoe

Cask @ Standing Order, Edinburgh [221013]
Blonde, clear, thin white head
Aroma of caley malts, that butter popcorn, bit eggy, oh no not again
Taste of caley malts, quite mineraly, cereal malts, some indistinct citrus zest, touch of creramy cereal, but no
Palate - Light body, quite oily. Finish asmain flavour, quite dry, bit bitter, soft fruits, bit metallic
Overall - Not good at all...but what did I expect from Caledonian anyway? Perhaps the US collab brewers should go elsewhere..........

Cask at Wetherspoons, Reading. Very pale and slightly haxy gold with a moderate white head and a light fizz. Smooth, almost cloying in the mouth. Flowery with citrus hints and a bit of peach. Bit of spice in the mild finish. Pleasant enough.

Hand-pulled half-pint in the William Withering, Wellington on 18th Oct 2013. Golden yellow body with a pure white crown of foam. Mellow in flavour and aroma, malts just about rule the roost, but the hop content added more fruit-like tastes and smells to ensure the beer was well balanced and easy to drink. Nothing to suggest it was a ’Cream Ale’ apart from the name: ticks a box though!

Cask at the moon under water Watford jdw. First cream ale tick. Clear golden straw colour with a loose off white head. Aroma is woody and tea, but not much else. Flavour is a bit flat, biscuit malt and peppery hop. There is some fruity berry in the finish. Nothing creamy about this. I’m not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t this.

Cask at George, Croydon. It pours clear golden yellow with a thick white head. The nose is hay, cream soda, icing sugar, barnyard and light sulphur. The taste is cream soda, soapy, pithy citrus, grainy and straw with a bitter-sweet finish. Lorna says it smells like toilets, so yeah not good. Tastes OK though.
