After positive feedback on our small scale Alt Bier we’ve now scaled up and produced a large batch. Alt Bier is a popular style in the brewpubs of Dusseldorf and is an example of a German Style Ale. Paul our brewer is very familiar with the style having visited Germany many times and has tried to match it as closely as possible to the original by using Crystal malts for colour and taste and large amounts of Strisselspalt hop which give a lovely fruity flavour to the brew.

Cask, on gravity at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol October 2015. Copper in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. Sweetish, bready, malts, a touch of raisin fruit, caramel sweetness and a moderately bitter finish. Enjoyable.

Third of a pint, cask: Moon Under Water, Boston Lincolnshire on 2nd Nov 2015. Colour was a misty amber with an off-white head. Nose had a mild toffee and fruity aromas. The taste also had a toffee like feel with a biscuit maltiness as well, mini fruit flavours in the background too. A little disappointed to be honest: my first Welsh Alt, I wanted it to be more Dusseldorf and less Wrexham.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Cask. Lightly hazy amber beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Palate is light with mild fine carbonation. Light malts. Trace of tangy dried fruits. A most Sorachi like lemon floralness livens this one up. Light semi dry finish. Mild to medium bitter linger. Interesting.

Handpull cask at the Pilgrims Progress (JDW), Bedford. Dark gold or honey brown, a trifle hazy. Nice little tonsure of head. Very little aroma consisting of light caramel and malty notes. Taste is much better though: a sweet maltiness is overcome by impressively bitter hop. Decidedly bitter aftertaste. Some baker’s yeast, caraway. Nice mouthfeel, full for a low to medium strength cask ale. Very well done.

Cask at the crosse keys. Mid golden oramge coloured pour with a off white head. Aroma is zippy lemon, orange blossom and some biscuit. Flavour is nice sorachi ace like hop perfume, floral and hint of coconut, nice rounded malts. Palate is semi sweet, moderate cask condition. Lovely.

Cask handpull at Shakespeare Head Spoons. I mean it’s a brown bitter which is fine as I see alt bier as a brown bitter in Dusseldorf just served in smaller glasses. Amber colour so a bit light in colour for an alt. Some malt flavour light bitterness on the finish ok condition. Easy drinking bitter.

On cask at the Standing Order. Appearance - amber with a decent head Nose - toffee and strangely peaches. Taste - toffee dominated, light biscuit. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture but the finish is not as clean as expected. Overall - to me this lacks the freshness that I suspect comes from long slow cold conditioning. The Dusseldorf versions are more refreshing.
